Nebraska-Ohio State: Taylor Martinez Monday presser
BY | 1:39 pm, Monday, Oct. 3 | POSTED IN Big Red Today

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez did meet with the assembled media Monday to discuss his play at Wisconsin and the upcoming game vs. Ohio State. He just wasn’t much in the mood to talk. The sophomore was brief and occasionally non-responsive to reporters questions during his four minutes at the lectern.

Asked about how to address turnovers and ball security problems — he threw three interceptions vs. the Badgers — Martinez said: “Just make better decisions.”

When he reviewed the mistakes on film, what did he think? “Just gotta make better decisions, like I said.”

What did he see when he watched the film? “Just gotta make better decisions.”

How does he rate himself as a quarterback reading defenses? “Good job.”

Later, Martinez was asked whether he tried too hard to make plays at times — head coach Bo Pelini suggested this during his presser Monday. His answer: “No. Just try to help out the team.”

But when Martinez said he had to make better decisions, was that part of not trying to force something downfield? “Whatever you just said. I’m not going to answer that question.”

On whether the public would criticize his comment that he reads defenses well: “That’s fine. You guys rip me anyway so it really doesn’t matter.”

Is it tough not to pay attention to the negative press? “I don’t read anything you guys say. I hear it from other people. Then other people relay it back to me.”

  1. Husker John says:

Sigh. He’s getting to be more and more like the ol’ ball coach. Saying the same thing over and over again. Adversarial at press conferences. I’m waiting for that headline that says “Martinez to transfer”.

    • Flyarcher10 says:

I find some of the posts on here amazing. I have a hard time believing any of you ever played sports – certainly not at the D1 level. Martinez and the team are smarting and Martinez is taking a healthy dose of abuse. Did I like the way the game went? Heck no. Was I feeling pretty good about the 3 INT’s? No. But guys, Martinez is a sophmore..maybe 20 years old and maybe started 12 – 15 games at NU. In two years he has had two different offensive systems to learn… I also find it interesting you guys are cracking on Martinez…gee, I don’t think it was Martinez that gave up 48 points….back off and give the guy a break.

      • Husker fan 03 says:

You said it ALL Flyarcher10…….LEAVE MARTINEZ ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GIVE HIM A BREAK!!!!!!!!!

      • dave says:

Yep, well said. I gotta agree. The webhate for Martinez is crazy, but I think they get egged on by the media. For example, the way that Kevin Kugler talks about Martinez, you’d think he was ready to strap on some pads and go out there to take over.

NEWSFLASH: Martinez would smoke you in every way a mouthy little nerd-critic can be smoked.

    • Scott says:

I would be fine with him transferring, he is not the quarterback that we are trying to make him. He needs to be moved to WR and use his speed to make him successful. If Beck’s “NEW” offense is going to be successful you need to be able to throw a pass that isn’t 3 yards behind the receiver. Talented guy but no pocket ability, no accuracy, locks down on one receiver from the start, and bad decision making aren’t the qualities of D1 quarterback. All those teams that wouldn’t recruit him as a QB were smart enough to recognize their limitations and his abilities.

      • Old School says:

I have to admit – I feel for the guy, he’s been ripped by everyone, including me. I feel bad because his coach is trying to make him something he’s not…a throwing quarterback. He’s not great at the option either BUT I would love for him to step up and prove all of us “nay-sayers” wrong and shut us up. It’s apparent that all of the negativity has made an impact on him – how couldn’t it.

For a guy with that much atheletic ability – I simply think coaches have him in the wrong position. Spending time and teaching him to stay in control and not think he has to throw a touchdown every time he throws a pass, and spend time with him to show how to effectively run the option would be time well spent because it’s obvious there are no plans to move him into another position or even out of the starting QB position.

Bottom line is – he’s our quarterback, we need to get loud and pick him back up with as much passion as we’ve putting into tearing him apart.

  2. Mark Weber says:

Wow, that’s the kind of leadership we need! Really gets you pumped up for next week. What a model of leadership! He must be a real inspiration in that huddle! (NOT!)

  3. Pipeline says:

He’s athletically gifted but emotionally and verbally stunted.

  4. Judge Wyld says:

Podium is a raised platform that you stand on. Lectern is something you stand behind when speaking to a group. Often a lectern holds up your notes and supports a microphone. You may have a lectern on a podium and the speaker stands on the podium and behind the lectern.

  5. Bryan says:

I really miss having a quarterback at DONU that faces the media and says “I take full responsibility for this loss and for the way our offense performed.” I just don’t understand why Taylor doesn’t realize the leadership role the quarterback is supposed to assume on a football team.

I think it is time for the Taylor Martinez experiment to come to an end. The kid is a tremendous athlete and can be of value to this football team. However, it needs to be at a different position. He just does not posses the mechanics or mental prowess needed to be a championship caliber quarterback on the FBS level.

    • Idahosker says:

WHat you said is so obvious that it hardly needs to be said. But it seems that even college football has turned into a political forumn also. I personally like Taylor, but NO he is not a top level quarterback. But in all fairness to Taylor I dont think we have a quarterback coach on this team, I just don’t think it’s impossible to teach him how to throw a football. SO i blame the coaches even more than Taylor who I believe really wants to be a good player but is NOT getting the coaching.

    • cstylezero says:

I completely agree. He does not throw the ball well. He doesn’t protect the ball well. I think he would be better suited playing corner or safety or just simply transfer.

  6. L says:

I watched the press conference and I don’t blame him. Yes, he was short, but I would probably be the same way when faced with stupid questions about a game that I didn’t want to remember.

    • David says:

I would have to agree, Taylor is a FREAK athlete. But the blame for the game and how it ended falls on both him AND Tim Beck. Taylor because he made idiotic decisions. I will say that he has made TREMENDOUS progress since last year, but he still makes dumb choices. That needs to change or he needs to look into being a full time wide out or something. But Tim Beck, I feel should carry the burden. I do not know what the hell he was thinking. Every person in the country knows Taylor can not throw a ball to save his life, so why call pass after pass after pass? You don’t! Just because he was 5/7 at one point does not mean to keep going.

  7. Bill says:

His Presser schtik is nothing new. He needs a passing coach and a PR coach.

  8. Preston Gehle says:

i personally think all you half wits that know this game so damn well from your damn living rooms and have nothing better to do than complain are team aint good enough. The kid had a rough game will he be good i beleive so in time he was asked to do to much and pressed to hard to make things happen he is a damn sophmore not a senoir the coach put him in a bad spot by having him try to do to much throwing. He is everyones hero when he does good but you all critisize him when he does bad dont be a damn bandwagon fan if you like nebraska cheer him on and stand behind him if not go cheer for someone else im proud of the huskers bad game and all we will get better its one loss it sucks but guess what were still alive and we still got alot of season left. If you dont like it there is alot of other football teams to root for win or loose ill be right here cheering on the skers gbr.

    • Jeff Seaman says:

      Amen Brother!

    • Judge Wyld says:

Nebraska fans know the game and can discuss both good and bad. If you want to be a cheerleader, buy the skirt and go elsewhere. Pick up a grammar book on the way out. Half wits have you out gunned.

    • Terence says:

Your spelling and writing is on par with how the Huskers played on Saturday.

    • Bryan says:

I am in no way, shape, or form hating on this football team or on Taylor Martinez, I just don’t think he has what it takes to be a Division I quarterback. Previously playing the position of quarterback, not on an FBS level, of course, but long enough to know what mechanics are needed of a quarterback, I have enough experience to look at player and know that he was not meant to play quarterback.

So let me ask you, in your personal opinion, do you see Taylor Martinez as the quarterback that will lead Nebraska to a Conference or a National Championship? If so, what about him makes you believe that he has the physical tools and mental ability to lead this team to a championship.

I am not trying to bash the kid, I just don’t think he fits at quarterback. There plenty of other players that switch positions becuase of a better fit elsewhere.

    • Preston,
Good point but you have to realize a good quarterback and a bad quarterback. I am not buying this he’s only a sophmore, because in case you didnt know Russell Wilson isnt a senior either and he completely dominated that game. Just because he is young doesn’t make it ok to make absolutely horrible decisions. I do agree the running game was doing great and then all the sudden we expect the kid to pass all game, STUPID coaching. I see absolutely nothing that happened on saturday that can’t be blamed on coaching except for some errent throws by our young stallion (T-Tragic). I will back up the huskers my whole life but i would like to see some national championships in my time as well and right now we are blowing every chance we get by the first big game we play.

    • HansJ says:

That first sentence has the makings of a great country music song.

    • cstylezero says:

I’m not hating on Taylor but if the shoe fits wear it. He has not been a hero to me a 25 year husker fan ever. The problem I have is his inconsistant play. He makes bad decisions and he fumbles a lot! He is not a good leader because he doesn’t own his mistakes and doesn’t take any responsibility for the offensive mistakes. That is not husker tradition win or lose. He is young still however I haven’t seen much improvement on his ability to play the quarterback position. So don’t tell me that I’m a bandwagoner. There just things I expect amd he is not it!!!

    • husker redman says:

      Very well said Mr. Preston…………………

  9. Eric Eaton says:

Preston Gehle says it best. Heck, I remember when I was 19 and 20 playing on national TV, getting embarrased, making stupid decisions in front of 90,000. Then, 2 days later I had to deal with the criticism, judgement, questions, and doubt. It was very hard. Wait, I have never done that and neither has anyone else who ever posts here.

Nebraska is a good team, not great, but good. Fans need to be patient. It may be several years before we play for a national championship and even as much as a decade before we ever see a ’95 caliber team…if ever. Move on to the next game. Go Big Red

    • I have not personally done it but if you watch ESPN there are hundreds of kids who do it every weekend. He does not have the quarterback technique to win big games. He will tear up bad teams but if you make him rely on his arm and decision making it is just a matter of time before he makes a mistake. Love the kid and i want him to be great but i haven’t seen any potential out of him yet besides hes fast. He is a very OK runner hes not great, i cant figure out why everytime he is about to get his he stands up and stops rather than lowering a shoulder and gaining that extra half yard. He is very weak mentally he has proven that over and over. GBR lets make some changes and win the Big Ten and get a BCS Bowl!!!!

    • First sign of weakness is accepting ok play and waiting a DECADE to play for a National Championship? Are you kidding me? We better be playing for one in a couple years or we better be making some changes. But having a chance against anyone good we be progress. Bo hasn’t proved he can win a Big game yet. Va Tech? Oklahoma? Texas? Tex Tech? Iowa State? Washington? Wisconsin? We have blown every opportunity for a big win, he did beat Oklahoma once 12 to 9 or something. We need to Win NOW that is Husker Nation. We dont accept Mediocracy!!!!

  10. Natebp says:

Bench the baby now. Seriously. His INTs and tendancy to fumble are not only costing games now, but his attitude is going to take the entire team down.

  11. L says:

Ditto to Eric Eaton. Go Big Red!

  12. Mark Weber says:

If Couch Bo would only let T-Mart call his dad on the cell phone in between plays it might help with the decision making.

  13. Albion Moon says:

I don’t care that Taylor acts like a spoiled 10 year old. That’s fine if he goes out and makes good decisions and leads the team, but that isn’t happening. He hasn’t grown at all since the beginning of last year. The comments from Bo about Taylor trying to do too much and win the game every play is the same stuff we heard last year after South Dakota State. He’s great at running in a straight line, but it doesn’t work as well against decent-good defenses that shut him down rather easily, and it’s going to keep happening, plus he fumbles and can’t throw. Maybe the other options (Carnes or even Turner) are worse right now, but if their ceilings as quarterbacks are higher, give them a shot sometimes. Even if it’s running every down, Turner would seem to be a better option because he’s fast, has moves and hasn’t fumbled (although limited opportunities).

  14. Husker Ron says:

Pelini needs to grow a pair and bench T-Tragic!

  15. Mark says:

What I don’t understand is Green, Evans, and Cooper have started in different games, they’ve rotated in and out during the game. Tyler Moore comes in the game at right tackle, commits a false start infraction and is immediately taken out. Pelini is consistent when a defensive player isn’t playing up to expectation or an offensive lineman isn’t playing up to expectation, someome comes in and replaces them. But when it comes to Martinez…. 3 interceptions in three straight series, yet Carnes remains on the bench.

I’m not a fan of musical chairs when it comes to moving players in and out. I’d rather their be more consistency, a moment on the sideline seeing things from the bench or a wakeup call is needed.

    • Pfeif says:

Not a good way to build up a guys confidence by throwing him to the wolves. Look what happened to Green, no self confidence.

  16. Mark Weber says:

I guess I missed the “T-Mart is light years ahead of last year” part the coaches were telling us about earlier.

  17. Monday Morning QB says:

This press conference reminds me of the year Florida lost and Tebow took the blame the made a self-fulfilling prophecy that Florida would not lose again and win the national championship….except it’s the opposite of that…in every respect.

    • Mark Weber says:

Monday, yes, a plaque placed on a prominent building would be fitting. How about “You guys rip me anyway” or “Whatever you just said” or “Good job” any of those will do, just like Tim when he was @ FL!

  18. waldo says:

I wonder if Dr Osborne is considering getting a different set of plans and qbacks??

  19. hastings husker says:

our best QB is playing wide reciever and a good WR is playing QB,Jammal Turner is the guy we need behind center, what is Blow Pelini doing?????

  20. HansJ says:

A USC fan [Trojan] likes to jab the Huskers, he posted long ago that none of the then PAC-10 coaches would recruit T-Magic for the QB position out of high school simply because he couldn’t pass well.

  21. Thank You Preston and Eric for being great adults!!I am guessing you two have taught or coached young adults and realize the kids get better with experience, praise, and age! This team will too. Performing qb1 at nebraska and qb1 in high school is comparing high school to pop warner. One truth I know, is “positive reinforcement and praise helps breed success.” Go Big Red. We love your effort, committement, and everything in between boys!! Thanks Coach’ for helping the boys get back up and ready for”The Ohio State” football team.

    • Monday Morning QB says:

I’ve never coached a team, but am an expert on operant behavior. Technically, positive reinforcement increases the probability of repeating any behavior even if the behavior is bad. Complimenting poor performance then increases the chance poor performance will repeat. Therefore, “positive reinforcement and praise helps breed success”…but only when you postively reinforce success and not when you positively reinforce poor QB form, 3 INT, and chips on shoulder.

      • HansJ says:

Maybe that’s why my wife divorced me, she always said the sex was good even when it was bad.

  22. Chavo says:

You can’t seriously put this ALL on Taylor , We all know he really can’t heave the long ball, so why was the coaching staff calling those plays? he has the intermediate roll out an either take off or dump to Rex, play down, or the Option… So WHY IN HOLY HECK were they AIRING IT OUT? Somewhere Beck’s face is morphing into shawn watson’s face

    • NUfan says:

I think every NU fan was wondering this same thing.

    • Thats just it we were calling easy pass plays and sending one guy deep to loosen the coverage and possibly get a wide open deep pass, but martinez didnt even look anywhere else he knew where he was throwing it before he broke the huddle EVERY play. He has to take the short passes when they are there and let Rex or Turner make a move and possibly break a big play.

      • Monday Morning QB says:

Maybe I’m naive in the ways of football, but why did the game plan change from when we scored 14, had success throwing (5 for 7), balanced run and pass, etc. It happened right around 1.5 quarters. I do agree with Bo’s press conference. Something switched after that first INT.

    • huskerj says:

My question is: Playing call might be coming down from Beck but is Martinez making changes at the line of scrimmage to those calls from Beck?

      • Richard says:

While these coaches make mistakes, they’re not stupid. There must be much more to the story as to why they’re standing by TM for now. Carnes must not be ready, and the coaches must believe it’s too late this year to develop Turner. Therefore, we’re stuck with TM for a while. Therefore, look for Beck to call a diversified run attack with a very limited passing game with high percentage, short passes where TM does not have to think. An occassional Hail Mary from TM to Reed/Bell will be thrown in for good measure. My sense is that even with this approach we will not win the Conference title as teams will jam the box. Hopefully, however, this will save us from another humilating defeat.

  23. Las Vegas for Nebraska says:

It is easy to see that nearly all posts on these articles are derived from armchair quarterbacks and wannabe journalists – basically the two groups of people in this world who have exhibited zero lifetime experience playing competitive sport at any level, unless you include rec softball, madden sports, online poker, or ‘wordswithfriends’ as lifetime achievements.

Add to this that the negativity and pessimistic bias of our hometown Husker reporters is garbage – in fact it is worse than the play on the field. Wouldn’t you agree?

If I, as a simple fan, cannot stand reading ‘local’ coverage daily, and look instead to national news outlets to get reports and updates, how do you think our players and coaches feel about a). being bombarded by pessimistic, assinine questions and b). being surrounded by negative energy reporting on a regular basis?

Yes we lost, it hurts and it sucks for all who want to see NU win every time they take the field. But after a loss, regardless of the magnitude, we all move forward, and expect and encourage our team to do the same.

Therefore, a real fan of DONU should start almost all of these blogs by asking more of those who ‘report’ the news about our team. Curtail your eagerness to constantly look for flaws, finger pointing, and personal attacks in criticizing our team – and do not continue to embrace the reporters who are supposed to foster support for our team and fanbase…The garbage just perpetuates a giant cesspool cycle of negativity where blogger and journalist continue to feed off of each other.

DONU needs your unwavering support, especially after a loss – rather than a blog version extension of the B level reporting and insight that these local papers and websites deliver.

Thankfully, most Husker fans believe in the power of positive thinking – but you wouldn’t know it by the people who dominate these blog sites.

When is one of you going to take a stand and start demanding Lincoln and Omaha recruit better journalists – don’t our fans and program deserve it?

  24. Charlie says:

It was difficult to establish a good running attack when they were drawing so many penalties. It seemed like half the time they were facing 2nd and long or 3rd and long, forcing Martinez to throw. When you shoot yourself in the foot with so many penalties, it will take you out of your game plan in a real hurry. You have to gain momentum early and keep it in an environment like that. The interceptions killed any momentum the Huskers had, but it didn’t help that the defense couldn’t stop one single pass Wilson threw. That guy is ridiculously good, but Nebraska’s secondary is horrible, and that caliber of quarterback will exploit you in a real hurry.

  25. ScottD says:

This blog is totally disheartening! Except for comments by Michael, Preston, and Eric the rest of you experts do not have a clue. Hopefully none of your sons or daughters will have to endure the moronic comments made repeatedly on a forum that is designed to stir emotion. My guess is you’ll be the first in line to gladhand when the Huskers mature and come into their own, which they will do. Let’s try some positive reinforcement and encouragement and let the coaches do their job. You oughta be embarrassed as should the media for asking stupid questions that no 21 year old college student should have to answer.

    • Husker fan 03 says:

      ScottD……your comment says it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • O says:

      3 years in the system… 17 games of experience…. 33 turnovers.

      Can you say Newcombe/Crouch…?

Square pegs just simply don’t fit in round holes.

  26. Scottsdale Husker says:

Chavo….I agree with you. I thought the same thing about the play calling. For a minute I had to ask other fans if Shawn Watson was back with the team making the calls for the offense. Beck must be reading the same playbook and following the Shawn Watson philsophy for Offense. Whatever was working….S.W. would do the opposite and Beck was does the same thing.

Wisconsin was getting knocked off the ball and couldn’t stop NU’s running attack, then Beck decides to throw and throw.
I think Beck likes to experiment and see what happens without any gameplan. I blame Tim beck and Bo Pelini for not correcting Taylor’s throwing mechanics during the offseason. If they are not correctable because he is not cordinated or whatever….then they need to find a QB that can step and throw towards his target without this horrible jerking or rocking back motion. He throw’s with just his arm and does not use his legs when he throws.

Tim Beck and Bo need to get a QB coach fast. It’s obvious that niether one of them know’s QB fundamentals, Techniques and proper mechanics. I’ve never seen anything like it at any level.

The bad QB play is about 10% Taylor’s fault and 90% the coaches fault for not forcing him to learn proper mechanics or finding someone with proper mechanics.

Brion Carnes deserves a shot….and if he’s not ready either…….again…..it’s the coaching staff’s fault.

  27. Melvin says:

NU will never beat a good team with Martinez under center. He doesn’t get it: on the field or off. He’s not smart enough and doesn’t have the physical skills to lead a running or passing game. He’d be great at a JUCO in Cali where he can be the star and only have to learn three plays. Taylor run right, Taylor run left, Taylor throw long jump ball.

  28. Melvin says:

Burkhead averaged 5.5 ypc Saturday and 6.4 for the season and gets fewer carries than Taylorina every game. How can a team lose by 31 points when it’s RB averages 5.5 ypc? Not smart.

  29. Coyotefred says:

First, some of the criticism of Taylor is certainly beyond any decency or fairness. In other blogs I’ve read several comments about Taylor being “mentally retarded” and even one about the poster wanting to “look for his gun” after watching Taylor and the game. Obviously such comments have no place in any college sports discussions, Nebraska or otherwise.

That said, I can’t agree with some of you painting these young men as the fragile victims of cruel bloggers as if they were pee-wee football players. Sure these are supposedly still ‘amateur athletes’ in college, but these are hardly little victims. At Nebraska’s level, and in this football-fawning state and nation, these young men are pampered, preened and worshiped from Day 1. They walk around campuses like red-helmeted demigods, and receive the nearly endless goodwill and admiration throughout the state. Should they graduate and stay in-state, they’re likely to milk their ex-Husker status for all its worth selling insurance, practicing law, or shilling for chiropractic care, auto parts and Dorothy Lynch.

In a nutshell, these guys rake it in (not just monetarily) throughout their lives, all the result of their brief lives as Huskers. For better or for worse, they enjoy an almost legendary status when hard-working students and Nebraskans from all different fields labor in relative obscurity.

But as they say…there’s no such thing as a free lunch (or training table). In exchange for this Husker-bounty, you get to put up with cornbushels full of armchair quarterbacking and criticism…some of it constructive, some of it less so. ‘The price of celebrity. If you don’t want that, play at a school and program (country?) that doesn’t worship the almighty football…

  30. Geno says:

My comments and opinion only. Last year we were told by the coaches that the quarterback race was close between Martinez, Green and Lee even going into the final week of preparation. It wasn’t close at all. I was at the spring game this year and it was clear to me that Carnes was the better QB by far. This year we were told Martinez was light years ahead of last year and just today were told that there is a wide gap between Martinez and Carnes. I was born at night but not last night. I guess the coaches are not being up front with the media or fans which is ok if that is the way they want it but then say so. How big is the gap between Martinez and Carnes that Carnes cannot hand the ball off to Rex which is what Martinez did on the last drive. We did not see Green or Heard in this game at all and abdullah once on offense if I remember. We hear from the coaches that Martinez is only a sophmore. The kid at Fresno State is only a sophomore with only two stats when NU played them. who outperformed whom. The kid at Wyoming was only a true Freshman, who outplayed whom? The kid from Washington only two starts before playing NU. Who out performed whom. The kid from Wisconsin never saw the playbook before July. I know who out played whom in that one. The kid from Chatanooga (sp) I know even outplayed Martinez. Parsa from Northwestern (All Big Ten QB as a junior, oh my and the kid from Michigan, Oh my and the the kid from Michigan State Oh my oh my oh my. So I guess what I am saying: There are numerous QB’s in the B1G with less time starting than Martinez and playing well, so it has to be the coaches. I am not placing one ounce of blame on Martinez, however I do think the coaches should be held accountable and they have set Martinez up for failure. sorry for the rant but that is how I see the it. Finally and for what it is worth I still have trouble as to why hotdogs are sold in packages of 12 and hot dog buns on packages of 8.

    • iseeredpeople says:

      Geno,

I have always wondered about the hot dog to bun ratio as well…

I was at the spring game, and I too left thinking that Brione Carnes looked to me to be the whole package, much more polished and better than Taylor. I saw Taylor forcing throws into coverage where Brione was more patient and delivered a better ball, and that was in the spring game.

Look, I think Taylor is a gifted athlete. He can, at times, win a game for you with his feet. But I don’t know if anyone caught this–HE FUMBLED ON THE LAST PLAY OF THE FIRST GAME…ON A KNEEL DOWN!!!! The kid just doesn’t take care of the ball–running or passing. He has the WORST throwing mechanics I have ever seen…

I am not a coach, I never played a down of D-1 ball. I have simply been a student of the game for as long as I can remember. Taylor may mature into a quality QB–We can’t look into the future and see what is to come. But that performance Saturday in Madison was UGLY. I think that if not for the three INT’s, the D may not have collapsed so quickly. NU needs to find a QB who can: 1. Manage the game; 2. Avoid turnovers. Based on game performance alone so far this season, that person in NOT Taylor Martinez. Is it Brione Carnes? I don’t know. The coaches are the ones who decide.

Did I see Callahan walking the sidelines? ‘Cause that sure looked like a Callahan-coached team out there, not a Pelini-coached team…

    • Old School says:

Love your line “I was born at night but not last night” – i’m still laughing. I think that maybe the coaches should just stop talking about his development at QB. To your point – the coaches raised huge expectations with comments like “light years ahead of last year”. You make statements by those, especially when that was music to everyone’s ears, it added even more pressure and higher expectations on the shoulders of Martinez. That’s the coaches fault. But my guess is that Martinez has stepped up in practices but the pressure he puts on himself in games pushes all that away. He might just be a great practice player – but caves under his own pressure to be MORE in a game.

I remember studying my tail off for tests in college and then panic when that test hit my desk – just like that , it was like I hadn’t studied at all :) Maybe that’s how he gets in games.

I didn’t read 58 comments… but of those I read NOT ONE, NOT ONE blamed the O play calling. We all know Martinez is a good running QB, And a decent passer when his not throwing on every down. I believe I counted 12 straight passing plays… 12 ! has anybody gotten upset with Beck ? 12 !!!! we have a 14-13 lead than we decide to start throwing the ball around the yard… 12 straight plays. Martinez is 20 years old and has QB for 15 games. Does he need to do a better job…. yes, does he need to learn how to value the ball more… yes…. but 12 straight plays. Who does Beck think he is.. Tony Romo ? oh wait a minute

    • iseeredpeople says:

Yes, Beck is responsible for some of it, but he didn’t make those horrid throws. It wasn’t Beck who forced things when the proper thing to do was throw it out of bounds. I totally agree that the playcalling was pure crap, but players execute.

Beck at least had the maturity and cajones to admit that he screwed up. But then he’s 40 and a man. :-) Taylor is young, obviously doesn’t like being told he screwed up, and doesn’t do a great job of expressing himself.

  32. Scott says:

This is what a leader gets to say in a press conference? If I said something like this to my VP, I’d be looking for a new job. Good thing Bo doesn’t hold his “young men” to the same standards.

Hear this Taylor. You’re a good kid who is trying hard. Keep trying hard. Maybe your 40-something year old coach will finally call some plays that play to your and your team’s strengths, not something he thought was cool when he watched Monday Night Football. Maybe the head coach can start screaming at his coaches instead of 20 year olds.

    • iseeredpeople says:

Oh, I am betting Beck got more than an earful from Bo. If you noticed, Bo was being pretty intense with whomever he was speaking to on the headset after the INT’s. I am betting it wasn’t the defensive staff. Also, I noticed Bo and Carl being pretty animated with each other a couple of times. But I agree, I don’t like seeing coaches at any level getting that nasty with their kids. Those guys may say they love playing for Bo, but it only takes a couple of those yelling sessions to make someone forget all the good and focus only on the bad.

  34. iseeredpeople says:

I just want to say that I think we all need to cut Taylor a break. So he isn’t the second coming of Tommie Frazier or Turner Gill–get over it! Do I have issues with his ball control and decision making? Yes. Does anyone who matters care? I hope not! It is painful to watch this team, but it is even more painful to read some of these comments. HE’S 20 years old, for crying out loud! He may not be the greatest thing since sliced bread but he is the QB that NU is going with, so we’d better get behind him.

I hope he learns from Saturday night. I hope the coaches coach him up, and rebuild his confidence. The coaches seem set on not bringing Carnes up to speed, so Taylor is who the team is going with. Gonna have to get used to it.

…Sam “Randoplh Hearst”… you just don’t get it.

Why do you keep hacking the kid with the same stupidly loaded , “we all saw it, and you are a turd”, question…? Do you think there is any better answer –if you ask it 100 times ?

I am no Martinez fan–but jeez–tar and feather the kid for a bad night –when a worse night was had by 20 or more Huskers ??

Sean Fisher looked like he was on roller skates. Big Bad fellow linebacker Compton was on his weeny ass, most of the night. The D-backs couldn’t cover the shade at midnight during a blackout…These Black Shirt clods couldn’t arm tackle a 90 year old with 2 canes…..There is more than enough blame to go around.

Let it go…yellow journalist. You and the Dirk Dork have to go “Yellow Dog Journalism”…. on everything.
You both no longer report–you just attempt to inflame.

  36. Scottsdale Husker says:

Hey Kevin…..I guess you missed my comment where I said the blame is on Beck for the offensive play calling. Yes…..just a few comments before yours.

Tim Beck is now known as Tim Beck Watson. All of you people need to wake up and see what is going on and see Beck for what he is. I knew Beck was a bad hire from the get go just as I said when Bo deciced to keep Watson after when he took over.

How in the world did Beck earn the right to become the O coordinator. Of course he got the job because he and Bo are a both from YoungsTown and grew up together. The Husker program is rich in history and deserved to hire a big time Offensive coordinator. This hiring from within because he is Bo’s buddie is a bunch of crap. The eyes of Nebraska and Husker nation are upon you Coach Tim Beck. Yes we are on to you. Bo will at some point need to cut the dead weight….meaning Beck to save his own job.

This looks like 2008 all over again.

There’s no sense in putting the players down, they’re kids for goodness sakes, but I’m gunna be the hypocrite for a bit. When you come out pouting like a little ten year old and you play at the college level you better expect a little criticism. Whenever things aren’t going Taylor’s way thats exactly what happens, he pouts. Your supposed to be the leader of one of the top programs in the country and you act like that? What happened to all the talk how Martinez has matured so much? Come on man, you want everyone off your back, you want respect, then prove that your willing to man up and earn it! Martinez has been in the system for over two years, started like 13 games or something and hasn’t made any steps in being a better passer. It’s time he starts showing some progress that’s all I’m asking.
