I heard back from our Ohio State student, Andy Smith, who last week asked for suggestions for his first trip to Lincoln.
He sent me a follow-up note. Looks like he had fun:
Tom,
Just wanted to say thanks for helping me out, and thanks to everyone who commented on the blog post. We visited Misty’s Friday night and spent Saturday afternoon before the game eating ice cream from the Nebraska Union, walking through tailgates, and enjoying the Sidetrack Band. The game was a heartbreaker but we had such a good time that the loss only dampened our moods for a little bit. We had a great time, and even though I was skeptical going in, there’s now no doubt in my mind that Nebraska fans are the greatest in college football. I hope to return the favor next season in Columbus.
Thanks,
Andy Smith
Thank you, Andy. I think we’ll take you up on that offer next season.

Nice story. It would be nice if you had a buddy like him in each big 10 town. It would give us a non chamber of comerce look into their town.
mmm, yeah
THanks 4 sharing Tom !!! GBR!! enjoy the off week guys!
;)
Sometimes I think that you have to show up dressed in the visiting team’s colors to really experiene the best of gameday in Lincoln.
It is true, being a husker fan is depressing
Thanks Andy, glad you had a good time. We are really pumped to come out to Columbus and see what it’s all about in the Shoe.
Best of luck to your team this year and in the future,
And GBR!
Great to hear back from Andy. I knew he would enjoy the game day experience in Lincoln. I would like to know about some of his experiences at other BIG venues on gameday. Are all the venues in the BIG as bad as the fan base at UW? I hope that if nothing else when these other BIG teams come to Lincoln they will enjoy the same great experience as Andy did. Maybe we can start a tradsition in the BIG about what a gameday should be about.
we should give free runza’s to opposing team’s fans
eating ice cream at the Union? what a LOSER!!!
gosh i know!
You are a loser for taking the time to bash this kid. People like you give Husker fans a bad name.
I enjoyed the story line as well. I’m a Chicagoan who has gotten up to speed on Big Red football by reading comments on both Tom and Lee’s Blogs over the past year. It is some of the best commentary and insight out there I feel. I’m expecting to go to see Northwestern play in Lincoln on the 5th. I thought NW would be better this year; just seems they can’t keep a lead as has been the case now with both Michigan and Illinois. I’m going to check out some of the recommended venues in Lincoln but keep them coming. I have to say last weeks game ranks as one of the best comebacks; but guess Husker fans get used to this by their team. Be nice to us Northwestern fans. We are the smallest school in BIG but are a proud bunch!
As far as other BIG fan bases being as rude as what Huskers faced in Wisconsin isn’t correct. I think WI let this years football team go to their heads a bit. I suspect some of this may stem from Madison being pretty much ground zero for the politcal infighting that has been going on with their Govenor and legislature. Madison is the most liberal town in an otherwise pretty conservative state; don’t ask me why but think some of this has spilled over to why we are dealing with their fan base being a bit rude these days!
I’ve been to road games at just about every stadium venue and will tell you the BIG fans are generally great to party with and have some long standing traditions. The stadium sizes at Michigan, Penn State and OSU do blow you away a bit. Attendance at the Michigan- Notre Dame game was 117,000 plus. That’s alot of folks! I know Nebraska plays Michigan at the Big House, that will be a very tough road game. All the BIG universities have beautiful campuses and solid combinations of athletics and academics. Each has their own unique twists but most have that great combinantion of business, ag and engineering schools. I watched on BTN the other night about tailgating before the Husker-OSU game. What a great show. It’s also a great promo for Omaha Steaks that is underwriting it. I hope their steaks really are coming out of Nebraska and Iowa!
Thanks for the insight into the rest of the B1G! I love to hear about B1G fans catching up on the Big Red and reading blogs.
So wonderful to be a part of your conference!
GBR!
If you want to get on a good comment forum visit the “Northwestern Message Board” and hit the football icon. It was one of the forums that broke the news of Nebraska coming to the BIG.
It also broke a few months back that both Texas and Notre Dame are headed to the BIG in 2014.
Bet Husker fans would have something to say about Texas coming to the BIG!
Nice article, Tom. A comment on Wis. It wasn’t very welcoming to hear the big BOOOO after the address system announcer welcomed us to the BIG 10. Also, the very raunchy chants out of the student section. So Big Red fans, let’s not Boo our team; it’s low class.
Shirley, the profane chants were out of line, but the Wisconsin fans’ booing of the Huskers was not. I realize booing is considered a sin in Nebraska, but it’s pretty commonplace and otherwise harmless at other places, as long as fans aren’t booing their own team. Trash-talking and/or booing an opposing team is totally fine, if you ask me, as long as it’s tasteful and done in good fun. It’s the personal attacks (physical or verbal) and profane chants that cross the line. Booing and saying something like “Nebraska Sucks” is pretty G-rated, in my opinion.
Excuse me? Isn’t “Tasteful Booing”an oxymoron?
anyone should be able to beat a michigan team that let notre dame hang in there like they did
Our future is in good hands with fellas like Andy. I agree with “gw” about BTN’s “Tailgate 48″ show; it’s still showing today. The only questionable part pertained to the two young hosts nibbling on RUNZAs and exclaiming how tasty it was. I tried to eat one once, only once.
i thought our quarterback’s name was taylor?
Runzas are the Shiiiiiiiizzzzz!!! Nothing better to sober up with by half time than double fisting Runzas
how about a slice of valentinoes pizza?
