Report: Nebraska looking at Iowa DL coach Rick Kaczenski
Sam McKewon Omaha World-Herald

We don’t get too jazzed over what amounts to a rumor for now, but — a coaching site clearinghouse that’s right more often than not — is reporting that Iowa defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski is a candidate for Nebraska’s defensive coaching staff. As in coach Bo Pelini is “targeting” Kaczenski, which can mean a lot of things.

What makes this interesting is Kaczenski — who played offensive line at Notre Dame under legendary position coach Joe Moore and has been coaching the Hawkeyes’ linemen since defensive linemen 2007 — is considered by some to be a darkhorse candidate for Iowa’s recently-vacated defensive coordinator job. Norm Parker just retired from the spot, and the leader for the job is likely UI DBs coach Phil Parker (no relation to Norm).

Would the Hawkeyes like to lose a position coach to a division rival? I doubt it, especially considering Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz — who played high school football for Moore — gave the young coach his big break after he served as a graduate assistant.

Kaczenski recruits in Florida — Ft. Lauderdale area especially — which is good, but most of the prospects he’d pulled out of there have been sleepers who never woke up, if you know what I mean. He’d have more to work with at Nebraska, however, in terms of tradition and facilities.

  1. dave says:

Why would he leave the coach who gave him his “big break” into coaching for a lateral move to position coach at Nebraska?

    1. Nathan says:

It might not be a lateral move, it could be for the defensive coordinator spot. The pay might be better at Nebraska too.

    2. NUCORNDEVIL says:

      Free bubble-gum from Bo. Duh!

  2. HansJ says:

Is he any relation to Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber? We need people who think outside the box.

  3. NUCORNDEVIL says:

snag him, at least he has played the game in Div1 football, anyone but Papuchis.
Question……Will this mean Bo will have to hire another recruiting coordinator?

    1. RedColoredGlasses says:

CORN = Rogue. Did Bo check with CORN to make sure he could check out this “coach” from the black and yellow bird team? Remember Dr. Tom’s staff was all aces and never had a problem.

  4. NUCORNDEVIL says:

i was really hoping Bo would look at big boy DC prospects like Jim Leavitt with the 49ers or Gary Gibbs with the Kansas City Chiefs, but then again we all know hiring someone with more experience than himself would mess with his ego.

    1. Big boys = big boy pay – NU pay does not = big boy pay means no big boys at NU

    2. Johnny says:

      Amen to that.

  5. Fugate says:

Fits Bobo’s m.o. perfectly. A nobody from nowhere and no backtalk. Probably cheap too. Awesome. Are we all out of Mrs.Nebraska winners? Runner ups?

  6. lil red in vegas says:

I dont want an IOWA coach……. I dont blame him for looking at NU .. much better in alot of ways… JUST THE FACTS, JUST THE FACTS……

  7. huskerred says:

I guess we will know by next season. As of now we do not have the right to ask, that has been made perfectly clear. Most likely JP is DC and who knows who will fill his vacated spot.

  8. socalhusker says:

An outside position coach hire makes sense. I don’t think an outside D.C. would come in to run Bo’s system and I don’t think Bo wants to change the defensive system. I think tweaking the offense and developing a stronger O-line are the more pressing issues.

  9. REDFANATIK says:

Seems to be a good hire. Papu is line to get DC gig. Hire someone with experince dealing with B1G O’lines. Would rather see Stoops as DC or another high profile coach fill in. Kaczenski will be DL assitant coach.
