We don’t get too jazzed over what amounts to a rumor for now, but FootballScoop.com — a coaching site clearinghouse that’s right more often than not — is reporting that Iowa defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski is a candidate for Nebraska’s defensive coaching staff. As in coach Bo Pelini is “targeting” Kaczenski, which can mean a lot of things.
What makes this interesting is Kaczenski — who played offensive line at Notre Dame under legendary position coach Joe Moore and has been coaching the Hawkeyes’ linemen since defensive linemen 2007 — is considered by some to be a darkhorse candidate for Iowa’s recently-vacated defensive coordinator job. Norm Parker just retired from the spot, and the leader for the job is likely UI DBs coach Phil Parker (no relation to Norm).
Would the Hawkeyes like to lose a position coach to a division rival? I doubt it, especially considering Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz — who played high school football for Moore — gave the young coach his big break after he served as a graduate assistant.
Kaczenski recruits in Florida — Ft. Lauderdale area especially — which is good, but most of the prospects he’d pulled out of there have been sleepers who never woke up, if you know what I mean. He’d have more to work with at Nebraska, however, in terms of tradition and facilities.
