The Nebraska men’s basketball team, which is so beat up that it may solicit the Red Cross as a corporate sponsor, had to sweat out another injury scare in Tuesday’s 72-69 win over Central Michigan.
Leading scorer Bo Spencer injured his left thumb (he is right-handed) with about two minutes left in the game. A postgame X-rays was negative, though Spencer cracked his thumbnail.
With No. 2 scorer Jorge Brian Diaz (feet) and No. 3 scorer Dylan Talley (thigh bruise) both sidelined for a second straight game, NU coach Doc Sadler could ill afford another injury.

Great to learn Doc’s troops pulled one out tonight! To prevent risk of further injury, no player should be allowed to take a shower until after the 27th for fear of slipping on a bar of soap.
Good to hear he is okay. Without Sam Keller, I mean, Bo Spencer, this season would be much worse.
The Huskers should also be thankful that the Chippewas could not hit their free=throws.
Much ado about nothing. Eh.
Too bad Lil’ Herbie mens hoops isn’t a Top 100 RPI type of squad. Then, Lil’ Herbie wouldn’t have their MOST of their starting lineup still playing in the game with less than two minutes left.
Heck, even with a couple of AVERAGE A.W.O.L. starters missing, Lil’ Herbie still couldn’t defeat a WEAK ARSE C. Michigan team by double-digits. Say it ain’t so, bozo.
Thankfully for Lil’ Hebie bUbba. The mens hoop team plays their USUAL soft arse non-conference schedule. Otherwise, your looking at a 4-5 non-conference record. Instead of a 8-3 record.
Otherwise, your looking at a 4-7 non-conference record. Instead of 8-3. dUh.
The fact that the first EVER B1G basketball game held at the Devaney is not already sold out, sadly, tells you all you need to know about this program.
If this isn’t a clear indication of what people expect out of the BB boys in Lincoln, I don’t know what is. If the status quo is what we are expected to live with, then we just as well get on the Creighton bandwagon and kiss Husker hoops good-bye.
We could put the big guys on a rotation untill/if Diaz gets healthier, otherwise it will take a big time effort EVERY night to play lights out and get wins. Regarding Spencer, sure he has an injury that could ruin his dribbling skills for weeks, but the cupborad at guard is not bare. We have a bunch of above average to very good guards. Someone will have the hot hand. We may however have to put Ubell at center more often than we would want. Still we are starting to run the offense more smoothly in terms of making the right passes and Diaz and Neiman will be able to put in minutes every game even if they are not much better. The funny part of this thing is that we at NU are building our program and don’t expect to come in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the league this year, so listiing to the trolls get on our Husker papers and start trying to mentally put us off is a bit weird. It’s like if the other Big 12 teams this year would have trolled KU’s papers trying to gain a mental edge. If we can keep the wheels on for the first half of the Big 10, then we will have a healthier team at that time and a shot at post season play. If Spencer is hurting for 3 or 4 weeks, it may call for Ray Gallegos(spelling?) to forget the red shirt. Over all were still ok, I remember NOT having a big man at all just 2 seasons ago and we did ok. Ubell is a better athlete than most guys 6-10 and I don’t think he’s a bad guy at all to have under the hoop. I know he’s one of the better PF’s(offense and defense concidered) in the league but if we need him down low then so be it.
You don’t suppose it could have anything to do with winter break ? has NU sold out their conference games in the Big XII when on winter break…. Nope !
Because so many students are from out of state. In the past, did NU ever sell out any games other than KU and Creighton… Nope!
yes Texas, Texas AM,K-State, Missouri, Creighton,
Besides, our fans are Bowling most years during the break.
Big XII games didn’t start until AFTER break. Plus, courtside seats are “only” 20 bucks to the general public. Given the opponent and the historical significance of the Badger game, I expected more. Never underestimate the MONUMENTAL indifference towards our basketball program.
I did not enter this. Odd…
Crazy–this program really can’t catch a break. At some point, a person has to wonder how much of that is the way that Doc coaches them…
Ok, I will give you that. We have had an un-real run of bad breaks, particularly at Center over the last 4 years. I don’t see that continueing. It would be on Riply’s Believe it or not, if it did. That alone could land us a good prospect at center, having the free TV exposure.(kidding). That’s not the kind of exposure we’d want.
Blue Jay mens hoop has been the bloody STANDARD BEARER of Division I mens basketball in the Cornhusker state. Eh. Sweet-16 run, for instance.
That mens team in the smalltown Capital town ONLY had a brief moment of bloody RELEVANCY on the major college hoopdom landscape. Yet, U’all good ol’ boys RAN OFF the best thing going in basketball down there. NEE-brasketball anyone.
And for the MORONIC blunder of RUNNING OFF the SLICK CITY dude from back east. Mighty KARMA has EVENED THE SCORE. Eh.
So, GRIND your collective good ol’ boy teeth. Because it will be SEVENTEEN ( 17 ) STRAIGHT seasons of NO N.C.A.A. Tournament exposure.
Nee had internal problems with his players. The only guy that supported his coach regardless was Tyron Lue from what I have heard(which may be wrong). Nee also did not do well with his big men after coach Reed left. That is my opinion coming from a basketball family. They were often out of position on defense(looked clueless). I do agree that Nee was a good coach, especially offensively and I have stated that in the past. Nebraska this year has recruited some help at guard which has paid off. No one could have foreseen all the foot and knee trouble however at center. It’s down right odd…. I’ve never seen it so bad for one team in my life. It’s really tough. Hope your Blue Jays have a good year and I hope the Huskers can over come their adversities and see the post season again.
Does Lil’ Herbie mens basketball even have a SINGLE win in the N.C.A.A.’s. Bloody DIDN’T THINK SO. lmao
Yeah, it’s about time U’all good ol’ boys jumped on the Creighton Blue Jay bus, because the Jays are going Disco Dancing come the Ides of March. And ain’t going to be in the N.I.T. If you know what I mean, Lil Herbie bUbba’s.
Wow…funny how all the bandwagon Creighton fans have nothing better to do than post negatively on EVERY Husker b-ball article. Creighton fans are the reason I hate Creighton and all things Creighton. Bunch of arrogant fools who think the occasional great season actually means the program is relevant outside of Omaha….it’s not. Just another mid-major with an inferiority complex. Get over it guys…yeah the Huskers are struggling. Maybe Doc’s not the answer. But at last most Husker fans have some sense of class….Creighton fans could use a lesson or two.
I’m a husker hoops fan, but at least Creighton has won in the NCAA tourney. We are inferior to them. Tomorrow night they will draw 4 times what we drew last night. They are good fans.
Also, I’m pretty sure we can’t call them out on class when Doc publicly chest pumped Billy Gillespie when Kentucky eeked out a win in Omaha.
Maybe you should look in the mirror.
Nebraska fans are the best in the world. I can’t believe ANYBODY could cheer for anybody else. We have the best coaches, fans, and athletes. Every other school should just drop their sports programs; they are so inferior. In fact, I’m thinking of starting a drivers education program for all of our athletes.
Yeah, then MAYBE some of those Lil’ Herbie athletes wouldn’t hit PEDESTRIANS and REAR END stationary vehicles. Hee hee Ha ha.
By the Mac, what School do you REALLY follow, or are you a coward and nothing more than a simple troll?
Placing the fortune of your program in foreign big men is a gamble that will cost you your job.
Nothing against people from out of this country. I just don’t believe they have as much exposure or experience with the game.
Plus they are wussies.
Recruit American thugs.
We’ve had some good foriegn big men in the past but I would agree that by and large we have given a schollorship to a guy and then seen him ride the pine about 70% of the time. I’d like to see our big men coming in, A) qualify per NCAA rules and B). Not come it pre-injured. C). Play at the level we’d expect for a B1G school to recruit. That has been our weak spot for 20 years. When we had a good big man, it helped out the whole team and we can easily see the correlation for years in the past where a big man makes a BIG impact. I hope our new guys coming in are good projects and not just filling a gap or taking a crap shoot. But were not top 20 matierial as a team yet and we have to take in the project guys where ever they may be from. Some of them pay off and some don’t. We just have to wait for a good NCAA showing and capitalize on it. We now have or have recruited about 5 big men. One may end up pretty good and another perhaps a solid backup, but were going to have to get after this injury bug.
Aleks Maric…?
the international recruiting days are mostly over now that Walter Roese is plying his trade in Hawaii
Why isn’t Stanhardinger playing more minutes?
Why doesn’t Eric Crouch play more?
