DL coach Kaczenski leaving Iowa
BY | 6:23 pm, Tuesday, Dec. 20 | POSTED IN Big Red Today

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz announced Tuesday that defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski is leaving the Hawkeyes’ program for another coaching opportunity.

Kaczenski is reportedly a candidate for an open coaching spot at Nebraska, assuming Bo Pelini promotes assistant John Papuchis to defensive coordinator. FootballScoop.com first reported the Kaczenski-NU connection Sunday.

An NU spokesman told The World-Herald that Nebraska is not planning any type of announcement Tuesday.

Here’s the full (and short) statement from Ferentz… “Defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski has decided to leave our staff for another coaching opportunity.  During the last five years, Rick contributed greatly to our program.  We wish Rick and his family the best.”

Interesting. Rumor was if he couldn’t move up to DC at Iowa he would look around, but it seemed to indicate he wouldn’t take a lateral position. Could he be in as Co-DC with Papuchis? Interesting that Iowa would make this announcement before Kaczenski says where he’s going.

  4. JD says:

Yes he is a great recruiter he took over in 2007 and every single recruit of his was a noncontrubitor to Iowa. Nearly all of his recruits transfered after 1 year. Rick also had the highest attrition rate at Iowa as he ran off more recruits than any other coach. Thank you Bo for taking this problem off Iowa”s hands. I think even the world herald reporter said it best Rick recruits all the sleepers that never wake up.

  5. The Rat says:

well if he brings no recruits in to lincoln that can play….NU will be in the same shape it is now!

  6. socalhusker says:

I think Bo will take more control of the defense. Bo knows defense. What he did with the defense when he got here was fantastic. He now is in the process changing the defense to stop BIG offenses. And yes, mobile QB’s are a problem. They are for every defense. I still believe the bigger concern is the offense. The defense will be alright.
