Nebraska’s worst home loss
BY | 10:57 pm, Sunday, Jan. 22 | POSTED IN Lee Barfknecht

After a dig through The World-Herald files and another search through the Nebraska basketball press guide, it appears official that Saturday’s 79-45 loss to Ohio State — a 34-point deficit — was the worst at home in the school’s 116-year history of men’s basketball.

A 37-point setback in 1905 to Chicago Central was determined to have come in Chicago. The NU press guide doesn’t give a location.

So here is the chart of the biggest home losses for NU:

34: Ohio State 79, NU 45 in 2012.
32: Kansas 56, NU 24 in 1943.
31: Montana State 61, NU 30 in 1930.
30: Kansas 81, NU 51 in 2003.

  1. Guido says:

Saturday’s game was not pretty. Although NU is still in the top 100 of the RPI (#98) at the moment, they have played the 21st toughest schedule played for the year. They are or will be outmatched athletically in just about every game in conference play (sans the Iowa and Penn State games) and the remainder of the season, including any post-season they may be lucky enough to qualify for.

Either the recruiting or the coach has to change to change the recruiting. There is no other option at this point or NU will be in the same position for another 6 years.

    Go Big Red!

    • Old Scout says:

Gotta have the horses to win.

    • David Anderson says:

Thanks for responding. If enough people will do that, maybe the people capable of making a decison will do it. Clearly hoping for a monster hire, is not going to happen. But there are people out there in the BB world who have sold their souls to the “AAU devil” who would be willing to come to Nebraska, and I guarantee they will not let the Gesell’s of the future leave the state, no matter what kind of house and car their parents want!

  2. Fred says:

You’re right. We just don’t have the players to win. That’s the way it’s been for a long long time. I wonder if we ever will.

  3. Mel says:

I see in 1943 the peach basket had a lid on it.

  4. Matt in MN says:

When will it ever stop?? The program is once again an embarrassment–something I thought Doc would be able to change when he was hired. Doc is a good man, but he doesn’t have what this program needs. Year six and the Huskers are dealing with record margins of defeat at home. I know OSU has a great team, but come on–no excuse for getting outright bludgeoned on your home court, especially after you just beat the #11 team in the country.

NU now has some of the best facilities in the country–now it’s time to go after one of the best coaches and put an end to this futility.

    • macjones says:

Indiana was a FALSE No. 11 and will most likely finish the regular season ranked between No. 20 and No. 23. Eh.

And Lil’ Herbie SMALL TOWN/suburban good ol’ boy, partisans. I don’t believe the N.I.T. or the other newly formed post-season tournament takes teams with a bloody LOSING record. Because Lil’ Herbie is ON PAR to finish with a losing record. dUh.

Because in a best case scenario, your Lil’ Herbie mens hoops unit will finish with a 6-12 conference record, and in a worst case scenario, 4-14.

So do the number crunching Lil’ Herbie minion.

    • macjones says:

I highly suggest you seek psychiatric help. Seriously!

Because no ” BEST COACHES hiring scenario ” will become a REALITY for Lil’ Herbie, bUbba. dUh.

And believe it or not, DANA absolutely won’t return to Lil’ Herbie-ville!

Simply because he’s got a very good thing going in green, beautiful Oregon. Quality of living is realtively better than the small town Lil’ Herbie capital, for instance.

A stronger alumni and fan base. Talking hoops. Not pigsking action. Of course, Oregon is the SUPERIOR program than Lil’ Herbie now. Howdy.

      A relatively better new arena.

An area, the Northwest and Northern California, which produces stronger H.S. talent than the Lil’ Herbie state and surrounding RURAL enclaves. For instance, Portland, Oregon produces some SERIOUS prep talent, with players going to schools such as ARIZONA, KENTUCKY, KANSAS and U.C.L.A. to name a few WHO’S WHO in major college hoopdoms.

And of course, a mens basketball program which has had relatively better success than that annual BOTTOM-FEEDER program in the small town Capital town. Case in point. The Ducks have had an ELITE-8 run. Has Lil’ Herbie even won a N.C.A.A. Tournament game. Didn’t think so.

In other words, DANA is staying put in the Oregon Trail state. Bloody well GUARANTEE it!!

      • Tyler says:

What’s up with the Lil’ Herbie thing? Is it supposed to be funny? orrrr? What is your angle there? Just wondering what the deal is with that. You sound stupid.

        • BlueJays play in a bush league says:

His a worthless Bluejay fan. Heck I don’t know how good the Bluejays are as they never play anybody. Next week they play the Sisters of the poor, and Boys town. Metro Tech is looking to join the Mo. Valley next year. So with that weak sister schedule it’s hard to get a gauge on how good the Jays r.

          • Mike says:

Scoreboard. CU played their worst game of the year against NU and still won by double digits. NU and CU should switch conferences. While we’re at it, CU should take over that practice facility, too. They’ve earned it. Giving a nice practice facility to NU is like buying a Porsche for a two year old

          • Steve says:

Basketball in March is awesome, you should try it sometime

          • Greg says:

Is Mac Jones your boss? It seems like you have an inferiority complex towards CU.

  5. Jim C says:

Get rid of Doc Sadler now. He’s a lousy coach with marginal talent. Can’t recruit in our state, let alone the United States, he spends more time recruiting overseas than anyone else……he was quoted as saying that his ballclub played their best game against Florida Gulf Coast, a 1 point victory. Wow.

  6. Jim C says:

At least for this season, Creighton Bluejays are the undefeated Big Ten Champions from the State of Nebraska.
Down went Nebraska, Iowa, & Northwestern.

  7. wow says:

Ok, so yes NU basketball is not very good or consistent. But that is something we all know, right! I believe in TO and he has the best interest of UNL in mind when he makes decisions. Yes the basketball program has been very stressful maybe embarrassing to follow and I wish as Husker fans we could have something to cheer for in March at least every few years.

Congrats to the Bluejays up the road in Omaha, they are having a fine year for sure. As a Husker fan, I do not really care much for CU but as a Nebraska resident I do wish them success. But please “Jaybackers” do not get cocky now that your team is having a nice year, as your recent history post season (and conference tournament) tournament history has not been much better!

With that said, good luck to both teams the rest of the season, hopefully there will be some real excitement around Omaha come St. Paty’s day weekend!

    • wow says:

      Ok so this should read:
as your recent history post season (EXCLUDING conference tournament) tournament history has not been much better!

Ooops, I am not an English major! haha

      • macjones says:

Yeah, and your obviously a Simple Simon Lil’ Herbie when it comes to N.C.A.A. Tournament tidbits.

But then again, the typical major college hoopdom fandom couldn’t blame you for your STUPIDITY regarding the N.C.A.A. Tournament and major college basketball in general. Eh.

Because the Creighton Blue Jays have REACHED the Sweet-18. dUh.

And has Lil’ Herbie mens hoops even won one single game in the Tournament that matters most. Bloody well didn’t think so. LOL

        • wow...haha says:

Ok well I thought in the NCAA tournament it was the SWEET 16 (not sweet 18)… But what do I know, right pal!

My point was yes they have had more success in the NCAA tournament throughout history, but their recent post season success has not been much better. Maybe you should go back and read the post again, mate.

      • Greg says:

Are you talking about NCAA wins? Yeah, if you’re a Husker Hoops fan, you don’t really know what you’re talking about

  8. true colors? says:

I can not help but always notice how the author of this blog always has to point out the negative in UNL. I understand he is “only doing his job” as he states, but it is a trend that I am sure many people have noticed. It does get kind of old but I guess it does provide some “outside” perspective.

No point really, just a comment/observation.

    GBR!

    • macjones says:

Lil’ Herbie small town good ol’ boy. There ain’t much positive Lil’ Herbie basketbal hoop matters to yap about. dUh.

By the way, you wouldn’t happen to be a small town Good Ol’ boy Roy now. Would ya.

Oh, I see your another one of the BRAINED-WASHED Lil’ herbie masses. Especially when it comes to Lil’ Herbie mens basketball. Howdy.

In other words, the bloody TRUTH hurts Lil’ Herbie minion. Even when it comes packaged in negative truth about Lil’ Herbie roundball.

      • true colors? says:

Howdie partner, well actually I just moved to the “Big City” here in Omaha from the sticks out west! I just can not believe there is actually running water in the john! That is just amazin’! Maybe ya’ll should take that bad behavior and attitude ya’ll have and skip across town because ya aint saying nothing that is worth a darn! ya hear?!

      • Don C says:

Hey macjones…you are not funny, interesting nor very bright… or should I SaY BrIgHt…go soak your head in holy water.

        • macjones says:

You don’t say, good ol’ boy roy. Eh.

Too bad the absolute T-R-U-T-H regarding your team de jure leaves you and your Lil’ Herbie MINIONS in a rage of anger. LOL

  9. BlueJays Play in a bush league says:

Just wonder…. If I coached and only had to get up for one or two games a year how would I do ? Now see here the Blue Jay turds don’t have to get up for the Sisters of the poor, Nun State, Preist U, or Alterboy State. However I must say if Metropolitan Community College is gained access into the Mo Valley look out !!!!! they could create a rivalry and soon take over for the Sisters of the poor as the main BJ rival…. I mean Mary Helen Dirtman the 5’8″ 280 Nun currently running the post for the Sisters will be graduating this year….

    • Steve says:

Florida Gulf Coast! Husker Hoops is terrible, has always been terrible, and always will be terrible.
      You’re pathetic!

      • David Anderson says:

I am disappointed in the quality of the trash that gets posted here. Lee B is writing excellent journalism pieces, that just maybe will get the attention of the higher powers in Lincoln. Certainly what Wisconsin has done in BB and what is clear that Iowa will be doing (with a Nebraska native in a starring role) give us hope that with the right leadership, we, too, can have the hope of a competitive, enjoyable product onthe hardwood within the next 3-5 years. It will not be a product coached by Doc Sadler!

    • Greg says:

MVC vs B1G 5-5. Not exactly lil sisters of the poor is it?
      Basketball in March is fun!
Enjoy being a conference doormat! NU would get killed by Evansville (beat Butler, by the way)

      • BlueJays Play in a bush league says:

Greg who have you played ? I know, I know, San Diego St. So I go back to you play one or two games a year….. come on dude get real

        • Tony says:

You guys are right. Nebraska is GREAT. They just play in a really tough league. They would probably win the conference if they were in any other league. The Blue Jays really stink. They don’t have near the facilities, training table, recruiting budget, or academic support that Nebraska provides. I can’t believe that anybody could cheer for them. Nebraska is the best at everything. I remember Steve Pedersen telling us that. I fact, we would have won the football national championships the last three years if the refs had not been against us. If we beat Iowa on Thursday, we will have won FIVE road games since 2002. How can anybody root for the Bluejays??

  10. rob g says:

Yes, Creighton has a decent team this year, they would finish middle of the pack in the BIG 10 maybe? The argument here isn’t whose better, it is the relentless negativity by Lee and his subjective writing. He hates Bo Pelini, and now he is attacking Doc Sadler. Good thing Connie’s team is playing well, otherwise she would be getting a beatdown as well. The best husker hoops was under Danny Nee until those wheels fell off at the end. Doc needs to go, we need a fresh face that can recruit. He will probably get another year though.

    • Tony says:

The funny thing is, Creighton would have a better chance of making the NCAA’s every year IF they were in the Big 10. I’d rather have the Jays have to win a tough Valley conference to make the tournament instead of settling for 6th in the Big 10 and still being let into the tournament. Give me the Valley any day; EVERY game is a big game.

      • Kevin says:

You’re right. Creighton’s win over Missouri State on the same night that Nebraska beat Indiana was a much bigger win for Creighton.
