Just a few extra Bo Pelini quotes from Wednesday’s press conference that are somewhat intriguing, but haven’t found a home just yet.
A simple way to wind down a busy day, right? Words from Nebraska’s fifth-year head coach…
>> “This is as talented a walk-on class as you could ever (have). On the surface, we’ll see how it plays out, but probably the most talented group we’ve brought in.”
>> On quarterback Tommy Armstrong: “Really excited about the type of leader he is, the type of command he has in the huddle, the type of person that we’re getting. … We thought he was good obviously when we offered him, but we grew to like him even more.”
>> On signing day festivities: “I signed and my parents grabbed me and said, ‘Get your butt to school.’ That’s the way it happened there. That’s the way it should be.”
>> On linebacker Michael Rose: “He can play for anybody, or we wouldn’t have recruited him.”
>> On juco linebacker Zaire Anderson: “Zaire’s a good player. We think he’s going to have the potential to help us. How quickly that is? We’ll find out. But obviously on the surface we really like what he brings to the table.”
>> On tight end Sam Cotton: “I think he’s very similar to where Ben (Cotton) was at this time, maybe a little bit ahead of where Ben was when we recruited him a few years ago. Hopefully, he develops the same way.”
>> Former Husker Prince Amukamara, now with the New York Giants, is shooting for a Super Bowl victory. “I hope he wins. … It’s only his rookie year, so you don’t want say it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience — but you’ve got to take advantage when you get there because it’s hard to get there.

If the 2011 O-line recruits develop then the whole Peat snub will become a distant memory. Time will tell but in all we addressed the D which was what needed to happen most.
Klacko, Sterup, Reeves, Givens, Moore, (Freshmen)
Pelini, Moudy, J.Cotton, (Red Shirt Freshmen)
J. Long, Andrew Rodriguez, Ash, Pensick, Criss, Sirles, and Qvale (Sophomore)
Choi, Thorson, Thompson (Junior)
Not counting all the walk-ons or new scholarship players that’s 18 offensive linemen.
Thanks, CORNANGEL, for pointing out all of the talent we have have on the offensive line. Young, but some VERY serious talent coming up. Just need time in the weight room, in the film room and on the practice field.
I LOVE our running backs, and can’t wait to add Mike Marrow and Imani Cross to the mix.
Can’t wait for Brendan Stai to start contributing in coaching the O-line. A very strong, sound recruiting class over all. I think we got exactly what we needed.
GO BIG RED!
Wow. I didn’t know Stai was going to coach. This is good news.
He jumped on ‘staff’ last season in some kind of volunteer advisor role?
Really good news. I didn’t know about Stai either
He’s supposed to be helping Cotton. Which begs the question. What is Cotton doing?
Stanford has a real offense, and a real offensive coordinator/QB coach, people from all over the world are trying to get into Stanford.
Not everyone sees Taylor as the budding super star most Husker fans do, quite honestly, outside of Nebraska, Taylor Martinez is seen for exactly what he is, and to think someone with Mr. A. Peats options, would want to be a part of the NU ‘Dumpster Fire’ Offense for @ least two of 4 years?
Boy, did we ever have problems on O line last year. Seemed at times during
running plays the O line had no PUSH, just standing around.
Good for #3 in rushing behind Wisconsin & Michigan.
Fun fact: Nebraska average 90 yards rushing in 2005 under ace recruiter/offensive guru Bill Callahan.
Nebraska 11 games 383 attempts 1001 yards 2.6 ave per carry
Good enough to get drilled by the teams you mentioned. We averaged 217 yards per game last season. That’s not bad, but it isn’t good either.
Barney Cotton is in the middle of trying to right the ship that Callahan tried to sink by running a WCO. Then Watts ran a West Coast/spread hybrid. Barney has been hard at work finding lineman that are suited for power football that can get a first down running on forth and goal at the one. A lead block or two wouldn’t hurt either.
Nebraska Rushing Statistics:
Avg Y/G TD 1stD
2011 – 4.8 223.9 31 135
2010 – 5.7 259.6 32 143
2009 – 4.0 141.2 20 87
2008 – 4.6 173.5 27 110
2007 – 4.2 144.4 19 89
2006 – 4.4 175.6 27 119
2005 – 2.6 91.0 10 64
2004 – 4.7 176.3 18 85
2003 – 4.3 236.2 28 153
It’s the ‘Thud Up’ Pro style practice system.
Boy, did we ever have problems on O line last year. Seemed at times during
running plays the O line had no PUSH, just standing around. HELP!
is cotton still the o-line coach? then look for these problems to persist.
The O-Line is poorly coached. The line has been inconsistent and highly penalized in games for 4 years. A better coaching hire on the O-Line would greatly improve things IMO. I’m hoping Coach Garrison is the guy, because Cotton is not based on the line’s performance under his coaching.
Give Barney Cotton a line of 23 year old 5th year seniors and maybe there might be a few less off-sides penalty’s. Weren’t two walk-ons on the OL this year a first? Wasn’t there a true Freshman starting “first”? Didn’t he get yanked in the Wisconsin game for an off-sides penalty? How many JUCO lineman do you remember Milt Tenopir working with? Wasn’t it a JUCO lineman that had two off-sides penalty’s on the same drive in the Capital One game?
Until Callahan made changes to the roster, Nebraska usually had between 30-35 offensive linemen (walk-on & scholarship) on the roster. Callahan reduced that number to 20, and Bo had only 19 linemen on the roster for his first season.
Over the last few years, we’ve built the O-line numbers back up a bit (28 on the roster in 2011)
Rushing stats since Cotton has been the OL coach:
2008 – 170 yards per game
2009 – 147
2010 – 248
2011 – 217
I told myself at the end of last year that Cotton’s O-line coaching would have to improve. Well, we’re still making too many mental mistakes and our per game rushing average has dropped. How many years does this guy get excuses? My bet… you will not see a significant improvement with the OL this fall. Likely to be more of the same.
You need that many linemen in order to rate in and out. Why do you think that our smashmouth football was so unstopable back in the 90′s?
Far better coaching and much much better talent.
NU is desperately trying to recruit O-Linemen today that walked on in yesterdays.
NU will go as the O-line goes. If the O-Line DOESN’T go, then the O-LINE coach must go. Details, details, details. Hand placement, alignment, getting your feet set, stay low and explode. How hard is it to get in the weight room???? Just knock the HECK out of the guy in front of you and keep on fighting. On a running play, there is NO WAY our linemen should be getting pushed BACKWARDS. Full Speed Ahead!!! Maybe we don’t need the 6’6′, 6’7′ plus guys. Give me those 6’3-6’4″ guys that will bite, scratch, claw and beat you down in a back alley, that will play their heart out and will just kick butt and don’t worry about taking names, because you will REMEMBER THEIRS!!!
18 WALK-ONs????? There should have been 19! How many in-state kids got a scholly??? Nevermind. I’m sure everyone on here will figure it out.
Personally think there is alot to like about this class, really good looking linebackers and a couple of very interesting signees on the d-line. Valentine has some size (and apparently, relative speed) that is rare to Nebraska. Secondary could have been better. Hope i’m wrong. Offensively the 2 linemen are quality picks, really interesting receiver in Westerkamp, check out his Youtube highlights. Don’t know much about Armstrong but, God help us, sooner or later one of these quaterback recruits will pan out as we have had some pretty bad luck there the last few years. Understand the walk on class this year is one of the better ones though no one seems to say much about it. Nebraska always has a handful of quality players come out of that, something other schools can’t always say.
These new recruits are all unknowns, im just hoping Pelini’s juco pick ups contribute on defense as well as Dennard and LaVonte………or we could be looking at a 6-6 record next season.
First you say these recruits are all unknowns. Then you go and make a prediction about what their record will be next year. Strange logic.
People who dont get it, dont get that they dont get it.
Surprised you’re not reviewing your own class of recruits and preparing for the coming season.
Oh, that’s right, no one has offered to pay you to coach. You’re just another blowhard fan, all sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Pot… meet kettle. Or kettle, meet pot.
Barney Cotton is a huge liability, and a major reason why Nebraska’s O line is mistake ridden and does not develope All Americans. Peat knows this, and went to Stanford. Until Bo locks BC in the equipment room, we are in for Gator Bowls, blowouts and 4-5 loss seasons.
This only supports Pelini is too stupid to see what a horrific job Barney is doing, who is accountable?
BEN saying this for years, COTTON is mediocre at best. We had great coaches and system under TO, and developed great players, sort of like IOWA now. Milt has said he would help, and maybe Stai and Garrison will make a bigger impact next year, but please have Milt help out! If I’m not mistaken did’nt the 97 team have 10 of the starters on O from Nebraska? It seems to me we have the talent/bodies on the O-line, we just havn’t BEN developing them.
One of Bo’s faults is his inability to recognize mistakes… a stubborness, and a refusal to admit it. That is his biggest problem, but yet I commend his loyalty, even though it is hurting the progam ( Watson, and Cotton).
I have to agree that the O line has not been up to Husker standards for some time now, even though it was on life support during the Callahan Experiment and nearly pronounced DOA before Osbourne sent Billy packing. That said, Cotton and crew have had four seasons to turn the ship around and get us back to contention form, but we still don’t see the disipline and consistancy that we’ve all come to expect out of Big Red.
No more excuses Cotton & Beck…these are your recruits, your system, your coaching style. We can’t keep blaming Callahan for what’s happening now, the spotlights on YOU!
Whatever you do, dont blame Pelini, he is obviously a victim here.
Yet we forget how horrifically exposed our D-Line and secondary were this last year.
Here is a quote from Carl I laughed so hard I nerded to change my depends.
“They caught us off guard, they ran plays we didnt see on film.”
These were words spoken by a DC for ‘one’ of the biggest college football powerhouses of all time.
The SAD part is, Poopich has LESS experience.
I just wish we would see the likes of Brion Carnes or Tommy Armstrong next year instead of TM. If we are rebuilding, I would rather see Tommy in there being part of the “process” Bo likes to talk about. Martinez is not the answer on any level right now. He hasnt been the same since he got hurt in 2010 and his passing is pitiful. Unfortunately we will be reading an article after the end of next year on how good Tommy was on the scout team. Shame!
