All that pink

Much has been written and said about the girls basketball game Monday night between Columbus and Omaha Burke. I’m guessing that everyone knows the details by now, but here they are in a nutshell.

Burke was wearing light pink uniforms in support of Make-A-Wish. The Bulldogs led by a point at halftime when Columbus brought the uniforms — technically illegal by the national federation because they weren’t white — to the attention of the refs. The officials called a technical foul on Burke, the Discoverers sank a pair of free throws and then went on to win the game by 15 points.

Two things about this. It was unfortunate Burke hadn’t informed Columbus of the jerseys well before the game (something Burke administrators readily admit), to give the Discoverers a heads-up. Second, the timing of Columbus to mention the uniforms at halftime — for better or worse — could easily be construed as sour grapes. And to call out a team for trying to raise money for charity is not going to go over well, no matter what the circumstances.

I feel bad for many people in this scenario, including Columbus head coach Dave Licari and athletic director John Krogstrand. They’re good guys and, if they had it to do over again, perhaps would have handled the situation differently.

Columbus superintendent Troy Loeffelholz said Wednesday the two schools are talking about a possible joint fundraiser, which I think would be a great idea. And if more money can be raised for a great charity such as Make-A-Wish — Burke raised $2,600 on Monday night — then so much the better.

I would love to see something positive come of all this.
