Nebraska quarterback target Brayden Scott doesn’t lack for confidence or moxie. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder, who already has offers from Clemson, Missouri Arkansas and Arizona, has sized up current NU starter Taylor Martinez.
“The thing I like about Nebraska is that I can relate to Taylor Martinez,” Scott told Huskers Illustrated. “Not to be bragging or take anything away from him, but I think my throwing ability is a little bit better than his. My running ability is just like his, maybe not as fast.
“It’s really good to be like ‘Wow, I can do this.’I do this every Friday night. I can make this work.”
The Claremore, Okla., star threw for more than 2,000 yards last year and 26 touchdowns. He’d clearly like a shot at Oklahoma or Oklahoma State.
“But not every guy gets to,” he said. “Right now for me, I just want to go to a place where I can play as soon as possible. Nebraska isn’t far away and I’ve talked about it with my dad and he said no matter where I go he’s going to move. That’s a big factor to me.”
Scott will attend NU’s Feb. 18 Junior Day. You might see a Spring Game visit, too. Already, Scott likes NU’s fan support, which he drank in on an unofficial visit for the Nebraska-Iowa game.
“One thing I love — and it’s one of the things I’ll base my decision off — is the stadium,” Scott said. “I love to play in big games and packed houses. That’s just where I’ve been on Friday nights. I just love to play in packed houses. They’ve got a streak going since the 1960s and that’s a big factor for me.”
Another plus: Offensive coordinator Tim Beck’s offense.
“I like their offense and what they do,” he said. “We kind of do that. I call our offense the Wing and sling. We do the Wing T sometimes and then we get in the five wide and the spread. Sometimes I run, sometimes we fake the run and I pass.”
Like I said, moxie.

Taylor did improve for you trolls out there.. If you didnt see that , then you have no football knowledge what so ever.. Does he have a long way to go , yes, but to say he didnt get better is just making an ass out of yourself..
Also Tommy Frazier couldnt throw either.. sub 50 percent career passer rating..
Dude Taylor can throw accurately for 30yrds, He is also not smart with the ball, we need a new QB bad I hope Brayden, chooses the Huskers so we can get back to a bcs bowl game.
A moronic post… thanks.
Frazier won 2 national titles. Martinez… won’t.
Tommie completed throws when the game was on the line, rarely fumbled and was in an entirely different class running the ball. Don’t try to compare Taylor to Tommie. He doesn’t even come close to measuring up.
So you believe Tommie could have led this year’s team to the National Championship?
Tommy wasn’t a very good passing QB, I agree
However, the system Taylor is in calls for more passing. So the Huskers need a better throwing QB now.
All I can say is this kid sees the same thing I’ve been watching for 2 years. A quarterback that can”t throw, is one dimensional, lacking in leadership and decision making. A loner that has no respect from the rest of the team. Time to get somebody like this in there.
How do you know he has no respect from the team? Are you an “insider”, or just another troll? If we could get another Tommy Frazier, Brook Beringer, Scott Frost, Jammal Lord, or Eric Crouch, would that be all right with you? They weren’t very good throwing the ball either. How were they their freshman and sophomore years? Did they have a different offensive coordinator every year? They had offensive lines. They had coaches who had perfected their systems designed for option QBs. Taylor Martinez was a wide receiver running plays off of cards his redshirt year. Freshman year he was thrown into a system built for a pass pro QB. Sophomore year, new coordinator, new system. There were a lot of things about us this year that were a lot more questionable than Taylor Martinez.
brook Beringer could throw the ball and so could Tommy frazier
TMart has a completion rate that measures up with any NU qb ever plus prob more reciever drops in history. He has virtually no time to set up against any good defense and relies on having to ad lib way too often due to a weak offensive line. As with any qb,he has his weaknesses and the throwing motion obviously is ugly and hurts his numbers but he is still learning the position and improving. Just have patience for one more season grasshoppa.
Tommy Frazier could pass?? I guess you didn’t see all the grounders he threw non stop.
Remember him leading them down the field as a Sophomore against FSU with no time left. Did it with his arm. That’s what I remember.
I thought we lost that game.
Frazier won two national titles… back to back. Could care less what his passing stats were. We won… with him at QB.
Martinez will not win anything near that. We’ll be lucky to win our division in the Big 10 with Martinez as QB. Some fans get it… and some fans are morons.
Frazier would not have won a National Championship playing on this team, nor would have Scott Frost, and Eric Crouch would not have won the Heisman. They had much better supporting casts.
Tommy couldnt throw worth a crap, he had a sub .500 passing percentage for his career ..that would be worse then Taylors
Again… Frazier won national titles. Martinez… hasn’t. And won’t.
Again. Frazier had that group of guys around him.
Martinez, doesn’t.
“How do you know he has no respect from the team? Are you an “insider”, or just another troll? If we could get another Tommy Frazier, Brook Beringer, Scott Frost, Jammal Lord, or Eric Crouch, would that be all right with you? They weren’t very good throwing the ball either.”
Really?? You don’t see the “No respect”? I was at a few Husker games in the 2010 season and he was always on the sidelines by himself. Don’t know what you mean by troll. I have been watching the Huskers since the the 70′s. All the QB’s you mentioned were the catalyst to a win when they were down. Not so much with the current QB. Haven’t seen any skills development in Martinez for a second year QB. Maybe that’s the OC’ or QB coach’s fault, but you got to have the confidence to win.
The kid is also a know introvert, kind of an extreme one. The things you see on the sideline could be nothing more than those introverted tendencies. Until you sit in the meetings and watch practices you have no clue.
Martinez will be the quarterback for the next 2 years. Get over it. He isn’t the worst thing that could happen to us, and if you didn’t “see development” from him last year? How about how much he improved in his decision maker as a passer, he hadn’t thrown a pick for a long time before he threw that one against USC and that was 2 plays after he took a huge hit. I have seen enough improvement from him to have zero worries at the qb position next year. My worries come from the offensive line and how whenever that qb dropped back to pass he couldn’t buy the time to throw the ball.
Dude Taylor Martinez is the worst Nebraska qb in the last 30 years I’ve been a Husker fan. He can’t throw, he can’t scrambel and avoid pressure, he can’t read defenses and the one thing he does well (run fast in a straight line) has been muted. This guy is a clown and is the laughing stock of college football.
Scramble
Martinez is an aweful QB. His only strength, zone read, we hardly run anymore because coaches dont want him to get hurt. His decision making may have gotten a slight (very slight) bit better. But his completion % is down, his running yards are down and he badly misses open recievers to extend drives. Our defense may have struggled this year, but with a QB who can make the tough 3rd down throws, the D doesnt have to be on the field as much. His collapse under pressure actually hurt us and created many of these 3rd and long situations because of poor decision making, so while he didnt throw as many INT’s, his decision making is still very poor.
He certainly did not make the jump up that a second year starter should have made. I would rather put Carnes in and let him develop, he is a more consistent passer and much better at running the option, and with our backfield, we can do without the QB runs.
Tyler,
You are most likely correct. We will have Martinez at the starting QB for two more years. My only hope is that Bo takes on just a little bit different strategy with backups — especially at QB. Rule of thumb — use your bench when the game is in hand, or when the game is out-of-hand. We have had both. The never-say-die attitude is one thing. But, at a certain point, get the young talent in. They are the future and one injury away from bing the starters.
Did anyone ever hear of Tim Tebow? Pure and simple not a quarterback worth the class of a Tom Brady or Drew Brees or Joe Montana the lists goes on…. No Taylor martinez doesn’t have the best throwing motion but neither did most if not all the Nebraska quarterbacks of the 80′s or 90′s Nebraska has always been a program of might not because of its throwing ability of its qb’s but because of we will line up and shove it down your throat and fate you to stop it play of our qb’s let Taylor be Taylor cuz get if tebow can go pro any damn thing is possible… The low will get it right just like the fraziers and the crouch’s …. If u remember none of those people went to the NFL a qb… And it will be a long time before we see a Nebraska qb starting a NFL game……
His improvement has been in the passing game. And that improvement has been marginal. Add his inability to make plays with his legs (like he did in the first half of the 2010 season)… his “improvement” is a wash. He’s a game manager as a QB. And that is not enough to win the Big 10.
Brook had an average arm and a huge heart. Tommy Frazier was an average passer. Never even got a sniff from the pros. My point is we don’t need pro passers. We were great without them.
Sounds like he’s another troll. You know, the kind of guy that speaks his mind, says what he thinks, and states his opinion whether it agrees with you or not. You know, a troll. How dare he ever say anything that you don’t agree with? Right?
i don’t mind him disagreeing. I just don’t agree with his constant negativity and his reasoning. I consider trolls to be people so full of anger that their every post seems a hate filled diatribe, that or they are coming from an agenda that has nothing to do with being a fan and more with being a fanatic.
i like your comment – excellent perspective
It is easy to bust on someone who has such exposure. He is an exceptional athlete.
Watch the tapes. The ball got to receivers but were dropped. TM has bit his tongue very well about who is to blame. CATCH THE BALL.
The problem is… for every pass that has been dropped… there are 2 or 3 that are completely off target. Add Martinez’s ball security issues… he’s, at best, an average Nebraska QB. I have him down as below average… in the Jamal Lord zip code.
Jamal Lord was one of the best running QB’s at Nebraska and has the records to prove it.
You hit the nail on the head Greg.It would definately be a change of pace for the Huskers to have a Q.B. who knew how to pass, for the first time in MANY years.
Big Ben? HUH? This kid is 6-3, 200 lbs and is a pure running QB. Big Ben is 6-5, 245 and is a passing QB. This kid runs as part of his game. Ben runs…out of the pocket…to set up the pass. Other than being white this kid has nothing that makes him anything like Ben Roethlisberger.
Sorry this was supposed to be a reply to Husker in Kansas a few posts down.
Just because you are a loner misfit living in your moms basement doest mean you can identify one.
Anybody who has ever played a down of football and/or has ever watched a football game knows Martinez is a SAD joke.He is exactly like another “know Nothing” Husker q.b. Sam Keller who just stood there with his head up his a– ,like a deer in the headlights, when the pocket broke down and got burried.Didn’t know wheather to scramble or cry instead of dumping off the ball like any q.b. with brains would do.
Seemed like he dumped it off too much. Look at Lucky’s receptions that year and tell me I’m full of it. I agree unless some real QB development comes along we will be hampered by inconsistent play from our QB. That or we get an oline that can stop crumbling.
I wish I could disagree, just somewhat bewildered that Bo P is so blinded by his two year old decision to keep Martinez in (at a position for which he is clearly unsuited). If he and Beck can’t get off this line of thinking next year we’ll have 4+ losses and a big debate about Pelini’s future. With Carnes (perhaps a Frazier reincarnation) going to waste on the sidelines … !
Agree. If Martinez starts all of 2012, we will lose at least 3 or 4 games. And if he starts in 2013, the same thing.
This kid sounds like a Big Ten type of quarterback. Lets get him and with Cairnes and Armstrong it ought to make for some fierce competition.
Thanks Sam for the update! Always exciting to hear about new prospects – I look forward to tomorrows update when I get done plowing snow : )
Speaking of updates, any word on the teams nutritionist being replaced?
Taylor’s little brother, Drake, is also a 2013 recruit (his only offer is from NU). He’s listed as a RB/S, but maybe NU can turn him into a QB.
Please, no more from the Martinez family!
That is a moronic statement, the pure athleticism alone of Martinez is worthy of being recruited. It’s not his fault where the coaches put him
He is scary fast. You need to go back to fantasy football.
Dummies, TMart is the starting QB for one simple reason. He is the best QB on the team. To belittle him because of several shortcomings he may or may not have, really sucks. Degrading his personality traits is sickening. The guy is a offensive threat and I like watching him play the game, I just close my eyes on third and long. Here’s hoping he returns to being TMAGIC !
best QB on the team? did you even watch any bit of this year? when martinez was under pressure it was either a sack or a 1 yard gain. the man can’t throw at all. he can’t lead a receiver, he throws to a spot and if your not there well tough luck. Carnes is the best QB on the team but Bo will not play him
Must have missed all the action where Carnes proved he was the best qb on the team. I will notify the coaching staff immediately and try to pay more attention next season, dummies.
Other than the spring game, when did Carnes get enough playing time for you to determine he is the best QB on the team? Were you at practice everyday watching and grading reps the Husker QBs were getting to know that he was outplaying Tmart and deserved to play. Bo and staff are still growing and will make some mistakes, But I do believe they know how to evaluate personnel.
I do believe he plays the “best” player at every position every week. QB is no different than elsewhere. I don’t know if TMart is the ultimate answer at QB and if he can lead this team to a Big 10 title and more…but I trust the coaching staff! The best QB played last year. We’ll see this year how the competition shakes out! I am fine with fans being critical of players based on performance, but stop attacking the kid’s character.
Right on Georgia Bulldog!
If he cant figure out the play book, he cant play .. pretty simple
Carnes is the best QB on the team? Based on what? Are you in practice? Have you seen Carnes peform in practice? No you haven’t you’ve seen Carnes play 10 or so plays this year and none of those plays led me to believe he is better than Martinez.
Sorry I’m gonna have to go with Bo knowing what is best for this team since he is in practice every stinking day.
There are a few things I don’t like about Martinez’ game but his passing numbers are better than many Qb’s we have had.
His completion percentage is higher than Zac Taylor.
I would agree that Taylor needs to get better in the pocket and learn how to scramble a bit better but I for one saw improvements in his game and he is not the reason we lost 4 games last year, our defense was soft gave up a lot of points and yards and that is where we need to improve the most.
You watch, wait and see Taylor will be a 60 percent passer this year and will lead us to the Big 10 title.
Martinez is 17 – 7 as a starter. Why anyone would think that number is going to get better… well… there are fools. Your comment about him leading us to the Big 10 title is laughable. That… is not going to happen. Count on it.
No, can’t count on what you say. You sound like an irrate fan who has lost money by betting on the spread. Well…..a fool and his money are soon parted.
Don’t worry, TMart closes his eyes on Third and Long too, right before he looks straight up at the sun, slings that god awful side arm heave and yells out 500!!!
I love it when he does that! Kind of gives me a woodiie.
Too much male bonding going on here.
You have some nerve calling anyone else a dummy. There is no way to assess how well other QBs could have produced when Pelini has only taken out Martinez for a couple series of downs. One fact observable from the last two seasons is that Martinez does not respond (or perform) well under pressure, and the team does not succeed in tough situations under his “leadership”. The ability to manage the offense and motivate team production is an intangible that means far more in assessing a QB than one’s time in the 40 or an infrequent ability to break an individual run. You would know that if you had any coaching experience (or true football intelligence). It’s interesting that Martinez’s best personal performances occurred on days with heartbreaking flat days from the rest of the offense. He’s no leader.
BTW, “dumbing down” the offensive to a level that the limited abilities of Martinez can handle has been the primary strategy for the last year and a half. Nebraska’s generally knowledgeable fans are getting more and more impatient with an approach that guarantees 4 or more losses each year.
There is a way to assess players to determine who you feel should start . It is practices, scrimmages etc. If Carnes outperforms Martinez, he would then become the starting qb. That is how the system works. Anyone who claims Brion Carnes is a better player than TMart because he had a decent showing against defensive reserves in the Spring game is, in my opinion a dummy. I feel the coaching staff is also generally knowledgeable, even more so than uninformed Husker fans who spout out opinions based solely on frustrations.
Any coaching staff that leaves a starting QB play into the 4th qtr in a game we’re losing by 4 TDs loses credibility in the decision making dept. Especially when said coaching staff is called on it after the game and the coaching staff’s convenient answer is; “we’re still evaluating Martinez’s abilities as QB.” Really? After two years as the starting QB… we’re still trying to figure out how well he runs the offense. Ignorance is bliss.
I’ll be your huckleberry. I don’t know about “true footbal intelligence”, but i have 40 years of coaching experience in Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, & Florida. Played football in Oklahoma and Nebraska on a Class A – State Championship team. Played small college football. Coached at every level from 8-man to 5A at both public and private schools. Taught at clinics and coached All-Star teams. Coached 2 NFL players, 16 Division 1 players, and 50 college players at all levels. Three National Coaching Awards. Yes leadership is essential. Usually it comes with experience. Nebraska’s greatest QBs were able to do that, but usually as juniors or seniors. Forgive me for thinking that redshirt freshmen and sophomores are not usually the team leaders. However, I liked his leadership during the fourth quarter of the Ohio State game, the greatest comeback in school history. I feel that Martinez played at the same level in every game. That’s what coaches want players to do. Maybe that is why he looked better during the team’s flat games. I don’t feel that any coach or player can push a leadership button a get a team “up” that is flat. But, all-in-all, If Taylor shows no improvement this year, you are probably correct in your assumptions.
That’s right. And you, with all your experience, is going to witness that this fall. When we have another 9 – 4 season with Martinez as the starting QB.
Yes, they may be lucky to go 9-4. However, there are a lot of question marks on our team besides Taylor Martinez. I didn’t mean to impress anyone with my experience. It just seemed that the previous post was was talking down to people that had no coaching experience. Just thought I should put out my bona fides if that was what was required. I knew coaches Devaney, Osborne, and Solich. They were very human. My son played for Osborne. They were all great coaches. I just think that people don’t realize what was done to Nebraska by the NCAA after we dominated the 90′s. They purposely cut us down to size. Coach Osborne knew what was coming and commented strongly on it.
If he’s the best QB we have, then that speaks volumes about the recruiting and coaching we have. As in… they’re in over their heads. This staff blew it with Cody Green (a huge bust). And if we have Martinez as our starting QB the next 2 years, we will lose 4 games, at least, per year.
Which games did Martinez lose for us? Which games would have Brion Carnes have won for us? Do you really feel that Coach Pelini would lose games out of spite. Hell, I once fired an assistant coach in the middle of a game and made him ride home on the fan bus. I think these coaches are miles above me in ruthlessness and what they are willing to do to win games. If Carnes is the best QB, do you think that they would hold him back and risk their careers? Really?
Taylor is making incremental improvement because the game is slowing down for him. Seeing the field better means better decision making and secondary targets will be more of a threat. Another 10-15% improvement in his game this yr over last is reasonable, so if we get some decent play from our o-line I like our chances on offense. I’d love to see the vocal critical minority of the NU fan base reject the impulse to attack coaches and players, and instead, treat them with respect for trying their guts out.
If Brayden Scott wants to play in a packed house, there is only one guarantee. Sooner fans stay home as soon as the team is out of the championship hunt. Razorback followers only follow the team if it is winning and generally head for the basketball arena as soon as possible. Better head to Lincoln, Brayden.
What I have seen from Tommy Armstrong makes me believe that he may be the best throwin QB the Huskers will have had in Lincoln since Brook Berringer. Armstrong is clearly a better thrower than Martinez right now and he is not too far behind Taylor in his running ability. If Tommy A can learn the system quick there is no doubt he can beat out Martinez, if given the chance. The future looks much brighter for the Huskers at QB. Now if we can get some linemen who can block for our QB’s that would make things even better. Go Big Red!
One can hope.
Also want to say to all of my Husker brothers and sisters up in the frozen midwest to stop sending me your weather. We have enjoyed 70 and 80 degree weather all winter so far. This morning I got up and it was 30 degrees here in north central Florida. Have fun kiddies! I am looking forward to the Husker Baseball to start since the Huskers did not have a basketball season!
Speaking of basketball, I have just acquired a time machine and my first trip will be to the old NU colliseum to watch Joe Cipriano’s teams compete with about any team that ventured into that snake pit; what a great atmosphere! Marvin Stewart, Grant Simmons and Jerry Fort knocking down long jumpers; Willie Cambell windmilling on the baseline leading a devastating full court press. Jerry Spears and Bob Antalov dishing out assists to Fred Hare and Nate Branch. Anybody on board?
Wow. Great memories there!
Cant wait till we get a real qb not an athlete trying to be a qb…. I love the people who say tmart is the best qb we have. Keep dreaming and thinking he will improve and not look like a scared freshman in a room full of senior jocks. Turner carnes Armstrong are qbs not tmart
Personally, I don’t lay the blame on TMart’s throwing ability (or lack thereof in some fans’ minds) but the inability of receivers to catch passes that are right to them. What sticks in my mind more than T getting sacked on third down, is too many dropped passes on ANY down. Caught balls and an offensive line that can pass block would be my two priorities. Just my 2 cents.
Exactly. Inconsistent line play has and will be our biggest weakness in my opinion.
Finally a fair and accurate analysis of what the hell is going on. Eli Mannning would struggle with those recievers and Blarney’s slobs up front.
Finally, someone who actually has watched the games. Thanks Brian for pointing these obvious facts out to all these trolls. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
jeremy thanks for the laugh. best post ever. to the past post, maybe its the combonation of martinez having a release slown than death, the lines inabilites to block anyone, and the receiver who drop to many balls. in their defense they arent to use to having the ball ball thrown in their vacinity that when it happens it comes as a surprise.
If we could recruit Tim Tebow as a QB, should we? He is a pretty poor passer also.
Tebow is playing pro ball. Try and keep up.
Yes he is the qB that Urban Meyer (Your Idol) couldn’t teach to throw with four years of coaching.
With LaVonte David leaving, the offense should get plenty of reps to iron out who is the best because other teams will have 2 or 3 play scoring drives. Our defense will be, for lack of a better word, Suckish!
All you Martinez apologists, listen: Back in the 80′s, early 90′s, you didn’t have to
pass too much. Today, you live by the run, you die by the run. Martinez is too
short; can’t throw to a receiver in-stride; cannot escape pressure,e.g., Dennard
Robinson, Frost, Frazier, Crouch, et.al. Quit this crap about his completion %,
and look at his TD pass completions. I’am not going to even go into his fumbleitis %.
He has reached the pinnicle of his abilities, and you spell that DISASTER .
Why is football different now than in the 80′s or 90′s? Nebraska tried being a pro passing team in the 1970′s. Football goes in cycles. When teams are defending the pass, option teams do well. People start to copy them, the defense changes, then passing teams start doing well. People start copying that, then defense change to stop it, and the option starts working again. The key to being good is always balance. The hardest thing to defend is a quarterback who can run and pass. However, that is the hardest player to find and outrecruit other teams for. As for reaching the pinnacle of his abilities, most great NU QBs did that in their Junior and Senior years. Scott Frost LEFT Stanford in failure after his sophomore year, redshirted, played OK his Junior year, and THEN led us to a National Championship his Senior year. Did Eric crouch win the Heisman his Sophomore year? We won National Championships in Tommy Frazier’s & Brook Beringer’s Junior & Senior Years. Martinez was a wideout during his redshirt year running other teams plays off of cards. Thrown into a pro passing offense as a freshman. Sophomore year, a new Offensive Coordinator, and another new system. If he underperforms this year, yes he will disappoint.
Nebraska ran option type football from 1980 to 2003. Well, really to 1997… but I’ll give Solich credit for the single T formation he ran while Crouch was QB. Notice any cycles there? Or is over 25 years of Nebraska running the same kind of offense shoot holes in your “synopsis.” And you’re wrong about our top QBs in that timeframe. Turner Gill started as a sophomore. Steve Taylor started as a sophomore. Frazier started as a freshman (we played for the national title his sophomore year). Frost started as a junior… and that’s because he burned up his first two years at Stanford… and he would of never outplayed Frazier for the starting job. Crouch… another starter as a freshman. The theme with all these guys is… they all had “IT”. You didn’t have to make excuses about how they were going to get marginally better between their sophomore and junior years to suddenly get very good. The guys I listed were all very good right out the gate. We all saw that… including you.
I don’t see anything shooting holes in my “synopsis”. The post above me said, “you live by the run you die by the run. I talked about football going through cycles. You actually disagree with that. I never mentioned Turner Gill because he was the best QB that Nebraska ever had and that includes Frazier. If anybody had “IT” whatever “IT” is he had it. Frazier was more of an I-Back and had a great defense to back him up. Gill never did. And he came within 2 plays of winning 2 National Championships. Steve Taylor also did a great job. 5 TD’s vs UCLA. Never said he didn’t. I don’t understand your crack about Nebraska running the option offense for 25 years. Is that some sort of revelation? As for Solich, I sat with him several times while he showed me game film of their bowl games, so I do know what he ran. And I do believe he had running QB’s with Crouch, Newcombe, and Lord (With most of the QB Running Records you choose to ignore). Nebraska took a risk with a freshman who had never run a college offense because they had to. And that gamble paid off until the Missouri game when he was injured. He had “IT” till then. They were talking “Heisman” for God’s sake. I knew Scott Frost. Scott was a natural leader. But he wasn’t a natural passer. He didn’t have “IT” at Stanford when he played for Bill Walsh. Tommy Frazier was definitly had “IT”. Brook Berringer had a great heart, but I don’t think he had “IT”. Eric Crouch didn’t have “IT” at first and almost quit the team (remember?). Bobby Newcombe had “IT” but also had a huge ego that split the team. I look at Martinez as a kid, and maybe he didn’t have a lot of “IT” this year but he played steadily. He would probably be a better wide receiver, but until somebody with “IT” comes along, he is probably our best option. Your seeming hatred of him and Coach Pelini may cloud your judgement. I don’t love Coach Pelini. He seems to shoot himself in the foot a lot but I don’t see a lot of better options out there. WHO is the Coach that you would like to see take over? You never make a case for someone else.
Springer, you have way too much experience and common sense for most of these weak arguments you are getting. These guys think think the Huskers are a QB away from BIG 10 championships and a return to the glory years. In my opinion, only 2 players on last years squad could have made the two deep chart in the mid 90′s teams.T MART is way down the list on talent problems. Four returning starters on a def line that. I consider the worst since I began being a follower in 1962. I just can’t think about it anymore.
That is true. The glory teams were in a different time and had different recruiting rules, different coaching staffs. You switch Martinez and some of the other quarterbacks in time and space, they would have problems matching their accomplishments, and Martinez would look a lot better. This is all academic. The woulda, coulda, shoulda syndrome is what rules these blogs. The word “fan” is derived from “fanatic” and it sure fits.
I think all of us would like to see a Husker team that wins consistantly. I would like to watch a team that plays good when they win or lose. When it comes to the QB I think by last year we should understand how to check down to the second or
third receiver-not just tuck and run. The O line needs to get better but we need a QB that can make decisions and move the ball down the field. WE DO NOT HAVE THAT NOW. Coaches please teach him something-THROW IT AWAY-SOMETHING.
tommy fraizer was a field general first. a speedster second, but not a great passer. mainly he was a winner and a gentleman.
Amen.
T-rattle may be the QB the next two years but Tommy Armstrong will have the next three. This kid here seems a little arrogant. To make the claims he’s like T-rattle is nothing more than big headedness. Things at Div 1 football level is not even similar to Highschool Div whatever play at Claremore Ok or even at the level of Cibolo Texas area. He may be all that but he should show us not tell us. T-rattle is great till the team falls behind, he has great stats, blah, blah, blah but no matter what as of what we seen so far the fluster factor kills him in games when the team needs him at their worse.
Wow. This is insane… Remember when Bo was getting raked over hot coals for starting a Freshman QB 3 years in a row? Now we attack Bo for sticking with someone instead of starting yet another freshman QB…
Double Standards!!!!
There’s only one thing I know…2013 Schedule…
Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Iowa….
Taylor, Quincy Enunwa, Andrew Green, Andrew Rodriguez, Ciante Evans, and Stanley Jean-Babtiste will ALL be Seniors.
Jamal Turner, Ameer Abdullah, Braylon Heard, Brion Carnes, and maybe Todd Peat Jr. will be Juniors.
“Why must you be such an angry young man, when your future looks quite bright to me?”
-STYX
Anywho… Brayden, I’m happy that I share your uncommon first name, and I hope you enjoy your trip to Lincoln.
Who did Pelini start as a freshman QB in 2008 (Ganz was a senior)? 2009 (Lee was a junior)? 2010 was Martinez, as a freshman. Cody Green played some in 2009 as a freshman… and he wasn’t very good.
Guys, remember these are kids, if tmagic is not good enough but is still the best we have, we as husker fan must support him. If anyone is bashing deserving, it would the coaching staff. It is their job to prepare the players to be at their best, and to call the right plays for the players we have. I watch all the games from Puerto Rico and will always love MY HUSKERS. It may not always be as it was with all the qbs we had during the Osborne era but hey we still love saturdays at memorial stadium regardless who the QB is. I believe it all goes to the offensive line and the coaching of them. Get that corrected and we will be fine. I have to admit to be a little bit excited with a new mindset at qb be it Armstrong, Carnes or this kid Scott and if any of the beats out Martinez I’ll root for them also. Just my two cents, Go Big Red
The biggest thing about being a Husker fan is we remember the glory days the days of smashmouth bone bruising games and we remember how great it was to watch the big 8 battles of switzer and osbourne and we remember the back to backs of the ninety’s and the fear we put into people we played… But it ain’t the same no more and believe me it ain’t cuz our quarterback sucks or blah blah martinez this blah blah he’s this…. No I remember a time when our running backs struck fear that if they touched the ball they were scoring I remember a defense so scary u begged us just to let u score.. u wanna know what’s wrong with our Huskers… Hate me or love me for saying this but We Nebraska Cornhuskers have no heart as a team no more… Our walk on program was one of envy our offensive line one of awe and wonder our defense well just plain freaking scary don’t blame our qb cause Nebraska needs more then a damn qb and I don’t care what the stats freaking say….
+1
An Oklahoma columnist said it best the other day. He said Nebraska is a shell of what we once were. And we deserved to be in the Big 10.
We’ve fallen off, significantly, from what we once were. And I don’t just mean the 90s teams. We’re not as good as the teams in the 80s. That’s how far we’ve dropped.
i don’t think any teams are as good as they used to be. Most teams are one injury away from disaster. USC (since they stopped paying players), TEXAS, PENN ST, OHIO ST, MICHIGAN, MIAMI, FLORIDA ST, FLORIDA, OKLAHOMA, TENNESSEE, NOTRE DAME. Why just talk about Nebraska? You talk about me having blinders on. 85 scholarship limits have brough parity (Except for the SEC who are cheating)
And he should talk. How ’bout losin to Texas Tech, Okie State, and Baylor? Parity.
P.S. Go Big Red cuz I’m reping u down here in Florida…….
What a bunch of dipsticks, arguing about the ability of a QB that hasnt played in nearly 20 years, Dont you numbnuts have anything better to do? Get A Life!
The thing that bugged me is not one of them even spelled his name right….its TOMMIE FRAZIER…not tommy. nice husker fans.
They censored my response.
getting tired of hearing about the past. when are the glory days going to come back? when NU beats someone of any significants thats when the recruits and the program will improve. until then get used to what we have seen the last 10 plus years. i am and always have been a huge NU fan for 30 plus years back in the Gill and Rozier days. NU does need is a QB that can throw times have changed. defenses are cramming the box begging NU to throw. sure we pound it on some teams, but we are supposed to we have much more talent than they do. when we get with someone of equal or greater talent we end up getting beat. I keep hearing how tommie frazier couldnt throw either and i agree. he didn’t have to. NU was a run 80% pass 20% team, give or take a little. how can we expect to get these big time play makers at NU if we cant get them the ball. what great wideout would want to come to NU. the facilities and the fans are second to none, but does NU win? are they relevant in the NC hunt or even a BCS bowl?
I think we’re going to have to beat someone in the top 10 badly to get the hex off of us. Colorado put the jinx on us in 2001… and we haven’t recovered much. We have to beat someone good… 60 – 0… to get the funk off this program.
Finally, something we can agree on!
I think TMart is an adequate passer for a team that is run-heavy or even somewhat balanced (although I do wish he threw a better deep ball). Believe it or not, it is his running I actually have a problem with (his decision making too, but I wont go there). Don’t confuse speed with running ability. Straight-line, through the hole running he is money but I’m not sure I have seen him make a single move. He depends 100% on his speed. For a “mobile QB” he just isn’t very shifty or elusive. He runs straight up (like a sprinter). This keeps him from being successful at making people miss (or even deliver a blow of his own) while running. This is why he appears to take so many brutal hits. The kid is tough and I have nothing against him. I hope he shows improvement and does well. Just calling it like I see it.
i dont want to be misunderstood i am not attacking martinez, he is just not that good of a passer. I think his deep ball is fine it is his intermediate (sp) routes and the way he drops his head instead of keeping it up downfield with a rush coming. totally agree on running style, too stiff. grew up playing QB its the toughest job onthe field. It looks like you looking in a crowded bus full of school kids trying to find your receiver. I cant imagine he is NOT the best NU has to offer, why would Pelini cut his nose off to spite his face?
T Mart is like Ron Paul—- best man for the job.
