Girl power: Eddyville-Blakesburg junior Megan Black (9-1 at 106) in 1-A enters as the first female to win a district title. She qualified as a runner-up last year at 3-A Ottumwa, but transferred. More than 30 females have competed in Iowa the past two years.
Going for four: John Meeks of Des Moines Roosevelt (138) and Cory Clark of Southeast Polk (126) are attempting to become the 20th and 21st Iowa wrestlers to win four straight titles. Meeks (164-0 career) is seeking to be the first unbeaten 3-A four-time champ since 1993.
Seeking three: Six wrestlers are bidding for their third state titles: juniors Jake Marlin of Creston/O-M (138) in 2-A and Dylan Peters of Denver/Tripoli (120) in 1-A, along with seniors Brandon Sorenson of Denver/Tripoli (132) in 2-A, and Robert Walker of Martensdale-St. Mary’s (145), Jordan Bremer of Woodbury Central (113) and Tyler Shulista of Alburnett (126) in 1-A.
Williams goes for two: Among the 16 Iowans seeking a second state title is Tri-Center junior Loren Williams (48-0 at 152).
Pursuing perfection: Tri-Center’s Williams is among five in The World-Herald’s coverage area trying to finish with perfect records. The others are CB St. Albert senior Marco Naughton (33-0 at 285) in 1-A, along with Atlantic sophomore Darrian Schwenke (33-0 at 106), Carroll Kuemper sophomore Jared Eischeid (39-0 at 113) and Red Oak senior Seth Esaias (46-0 at 182) in 2-A.
Oh, brother: Two sets of wesetern Iowa brothers have qualified: Brad (106) and Blair Kerkhoff (126) of Audubon and Bobby (195) and Andrew Overton (220) of Denison-Schleswig.
