District time

It’s district final time, one of the most interesting weeks of the girls basketball season. Let’s take a quick look at a few of the top matchups in Class A.

Can’t see second-ranked Lincoln Southeast or top-ranked Omaha Central stumbling in their districts, so we’ll move on to A-3 at Lincoln Northeast. The Rockets deserve to be favored but second seed Omaha Benson has two of the top players in the Metro in Kianna Ibis and Zabrina Kentch and could make things interesting.

Bellevue East hosts the A-4 district but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Lincoln Southwest come away with the title. The Chieftains have done well without injured starters Jayla Hobza and Taylor Silva but it’s only going to get tougher from here.

The A-5 host is Columbus, and the Discoverers have been solid all season. But Millard North lost the district final in Columbus last year to miss the state tourney and could spring the upset this season.

Millard West hosts A-6 but Papillion-La Vista South can’t be ignored as the No. 2 seed. The Titans pose matchup problems for all teams because of the 6-foot-3 Rolfzen sisters and I think this district final — provided both teams make it — should be very close.

The final Class A district is A-7 at Fremont, where the Tigers have had an outstanding season. But Bellevue West is battle tested and could prevail.

Best guess? District champs: Southeast, Central, Northeast, Bellevue East, Columbus, Millard West and Bellevue West. Fremont or Millard North the wild card.

Now, on with districts!
