Swimmers to watch (along with a few others on the boys and girls sides) at the Nebraska state swim meet.
BOYS
>> Isaac Springer, Millard West, Sr.: This is a Springer show no one should miss. The Wildcat senior breaststroke star could have the Devaney Center crowd chanting “Isaac, Isaac, Isaac” if he has another big-time drop and takes out David Anderson’s 13-year-old state record of 56.10. Springer, currently No. 4 all time with his 57.00 at the Metro prelims two weeks ago, debuted in the Top 10 at 58.11 earlier in the season after a 59.68 at state a year ago.
>> Bob Glover, Millard South, Jr.: Glover is the defending state champion in the 100 backstroke and enters the meet with the best time of the season — 50.71 — despite missing nearly three weeks of practice and meet time because of mononucleosis. Missing out on some of that training time might be a reason Glover’s second event this year will be the 100 butterfly instead of the 200 individual medley. Or it may just be that he has the fastest fly time of anyone in the state field, 51.50.
>> Keith Sponsler, Lincoln East, Sr.: Sponsler set a Heartland Conference meet record by winning the 100 freestyle in 47.29 before winning the conference 100 backstroke title. He is the No. 2 seed behind Ryan Miksch in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, and he’s scheduled to swim a leg on the Spartans’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
GIRLS
>>Natalie Renshaw, Millard North, Sr.: The two-sport star -— she’s a starter on the Mustangs soccer team — leads qualifiers in the 100 freestyle with a season best of 54.09. Renshaw won the Metro Conference 100 backstroke title but will swim the 50 freestyle instead. She’s ranked No. 2 in that event, just 0.01 seconds behind Aimee Fischer of Lincoln Southwest at 24.48.
>> Erin Oeltjen, Millard West, Jr.: The defending state champion in the 100 butterfly instead will compete in the 200 individual medley this season as the Wildcats look to maximize points for the team race. Oeltjen is seeded third in the IM, and she’s also the top seed in the 100 backstroke at 59.43, 0.55 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Which two relays she swims on also will provide some final-day drama.
>> Omaha Westside: Can the Warriors, one of the deepest girls teams in the state, outduel four-time defending champion Millard West, Lincoln Southwest and every other team? Can they all have their best meet on the same day? And can they bring longtime coach Doug Krecklow his 20th overall team title? It’s possible with a good set of prelims Friday and how things turn out in the three relays on Saturday.
