Recruiting: Marcus McWilson commits to Nebraska
Sam McKewon Omaha World-Herald

The Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney pipeline is still going strong for the Nebraska football team.

Coach Bo Pelini and offensive coordinator Tim Beck’s alma mater elicited the second commit for NU’s 2013 class Monday, when 6-foot, 180-pound athlete Marcus McWilson called Husker coaches and gave his verbal pledge.

“I thought it would be a good fit for me,” McWilson told 247Sports. “With the Mooney family up there it’s a great fit. They definitely have a good academic program and it gives me an opportunity to play. I was talking to my parents and we decided it would be a good fit for me.”

McWilson is a 3-star, 88-rating prospect according to 247. He projects to safety and finished with eight interceptions for state champion Mooney. He’s the No. 30 athlete in the country and the No. 20 prospect in Ohio. He had offers from Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana and Purdue, among others.

NU has offered another Mooney star — linebacker Courtney Love. Love has offers from Ohio State and Oklahoma, among other schools.

  1. Skers says:

He’s a 4-star on Rivals and is #142 on the Rivals 250 board right now.

  2. This is a solid pick up for us, Rivals 4* rated player, it is my humble opinion that Rivals is the top recruiting site currently out there – sorry OWH but 247 isn’t in the same boat at least not yet. Pelini and company can recruit to Nebraska it is just a different animal than it is to most other top tier programs but this 2013 class will be one of the best maybe even the best we have ever seen at DONU. Just wanted to get this out before NUCORNDRIVAL and the other trolls start bad mouthing this kid and the coaching staff. While I am on the subject it is hard to read the OWH comments anymore because of all the negativity supplied by these “Idiots” if I might make a suggestion to all true fans of the the Big Red do not respond when they post a comment it just feeds their ego’s and desires for more just ignore them totally and soon they will die of starvation just like their brain cells did from being locked in mommy’s basement for so long. This is not to say that I am against any body having a negative opinion about the coaches or the program in general because I know not everything is perfect, and I do like to follow the dialouge that can be generated by such discussions (not a big poster myself) between true and honest fans of the Huskers. Leave the “Idiots” out of the conversation and make them go back to the Hawkeye or Buffalo boards they spewed from. GBR

  3. jack says:

    oh no not again.
    Another Youngstown product.
Maybe he should accelerate his playing time and he can be a NU football coach in 2 years.

    1. Travis says:

Now that’s funny, I don’t care who you are!

    2. Colorado Springer says:

      Definite 3-Star fan.

    3. NUCORNDEVIL says:

NU football is being coached by Moonies

  4. jack says:

Wow 142 ranking out of 250 – he is a middle of the range recruit.
Way to get those top recruits, bo

    1. J says:

      Quit your crying guy….
It’s not even the start of the season and you are already complaining about 13′ verbal commits…
We should be grateful we have two top 250′s already verbally committed… sheeshh

    2. Mase says:

Yes, 142 out of the Rivals 250 is middle of the road since there are…only 250 high school football players who are juniors? C’mon man. Getting any of the top 250′s is actually a really good thing; means probably top 10-15 at his position. Noob.

    3. Husker_Mort says:

      Um, Jack…your ignorance is showing.

    4. TOM says:

And what were you ranked coming out of high school, jack? You probably couldn’t pour p-ss out of a boot let alone tie this guys shoe strings. Go find another site to post on – no negativity here cry baby.

    5. Jerry says:

I would jump allover your post, but others have already pointed out what an negative “asset” you are. Getting any of Rivals Top 250 is good, getting two is pretty damn good. And I will bet we have at least two more before summer hits. You need to go eleswhere.

    6. ron says:

Jack be nimble.. Jack be quick.. Jack is starting to make me sick. Hey isn’t that mom calling you for dinner?

    7. Mosier says:

I’m guessing this is just ignorance. Getting only 10 of these “middle of the road” recruits would garauntee a top 5 class.

    8. Colorado Springer says:

3-Stars. Maybe 2. # 750,000 out of 1,500,000. Middle of the roader fan.

      1. A Fan says:

Who else recruited this kid besides us?

        1. Husker Tadow says:

Look at the flock of Starlings!

  5. Joey says:

I have to agree with “J”. You WON’T get the BIG BOYS, until you WIN THE BIG GAMES. So stop your BO WHINING THEORY. If Bo annoys you that much, then WHY are you making these ridiculous comments? That makes you even look like a bigger fool, for making such whining comments. Ala, LSU, get the BLUE CHIPS, this is true. But what have they done & where did they play their FINAL GAMES in the last 5 years??? It sure wasn’t the BANANA BOWL… true? Until NU gets to that kind of status, they’re NOT going to get 10 or 15 BLUE CHIPS, they’ll be lucky to have 1. We ALL know the reason for NU not being in MAJOR BOWL games. But it goes ALOT deeper than the coaching staff, and our AD. Wise up people.

  6. Joey says:

Wow I never thought she could sing. All I remember her doing is yelling. She can’t even carry a note, with UPS delivering it for her…lol.

  7. 2ndbasegreg says:

Recruiting rankings are so overrated. Go back and look at the top 100 5 years ago and tell me how many of those
guys you have heard of! Those Husker teams that played in 4 National Championships in 5 years, winning 3, had recruiting classes ranked in the 20 and 30′s those years!

    1. Elliott says:

Top 100 from 2008: Terrelle Pryor, DaQuan Bowers, Julio Jones, AJ Green, Matt Kalil, Blaine Gabbert, Tyron Smith. Oh and that was stopping at #15, I can keep going if you’d like. And recruiting is so much different than it was in the mid 90s, you can’t even compare it anymore.

      1. Mosier says:

So less than 50%. Even cherry picking numbers and years the rates are suspect. Recruiting is hugely important, and Rivals etc. give us some good guidelines but it is a 50/50 guess at best.

      2. 2ndbasegreg says:

Oh bullcrap. Just looked at Tom Lemmings top 100 hundred and their busts all over the place. The only reason its different now is because of the internet. Superprep, Lemming, and all the big dogs were around back in the 90′s. Yea you top 15 will hit a little more, but it is still a crapshoot. Many player peek in college, not highschool. Notre Dame was always a yearly winner in the recruiting wars back then, just as they are now. So keep reading your list!

        1. Elliott says:

Yeah sure there are busts all over the place. It’s someone trying to predict future success, they’re not going to be right all the time. But ratings give you a gauge, the percentage of players that pan out significantly goes up as the star rating goes up, so I’d say they’re doing a pretty good job.

    2. A Fan says:

No they didn’t. It doesn’t matter how much evidence is produced that shows Nebraska had classes in the top 10, top 15 for most of the 90s… the mediocrity element still hangs on to the make believe.

      1. Husker Tadow says:

        Flock of Starlings.

        1. A Fan says:

          Flock of Seagulls.

  8. Captain Marvel says:

    +1

  9. Mosier says:

This is a great pick up as it looks like Dixon will follow Raymond and we could really use some secondary guys in this years class. There aren’t many better football areas to have ties to than Youngstown. Think that small town has 4 or 5 top 250 guys this year.

    1. corn:dog says:

      Lsu has not offered dixon.

      1. Mosier says:

        Not yet.

  10. Nkomaha says:

Welcome Marcus! A great addition to the class of 2013. He is very highly rated and comes from a winning program. Well spoken, good hands and fast. I don’t understand the negative posts at all. We are supposed to be the greatest fans in college football. Let’s act like it.

    1. Colorado Springer says:

      4-Stars.

      1. A Fan says:

Again… who, besides Nebraska, recruited the kid?

        1. Husker Tadow says:

Fly around being loud and crapping on everything. A Fan is just like a flock of Starlings.

          1. A Fan says:

Alas… another mediocre fan. Show some class, and not your axx.

        2. Skers says:

Some offers include West Virginia, Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Louisville.

          1. A Fan says:

Do you think this list of offers meets “elite” status? The list would look better if Alabama, OU, Ohio State and USC were offering him.

          2. Mike Caramba says:

A Fan – another four-star that didn’t receive offers from Alabama, OU, OSU, or USC: RG3.

I say we stick to discussing the talent/lack of talent we see on the field, rather than speculating on the talent of high school juniors, based on stars and offer lists.

          3. Skers says:

He was offered by Ohio State today.

          4. A Fan says:

            Skers… thanks for the update.

  11. Mosier says:

Just tried to count it up, looks like there will may be about 10 guys ranked ahead of him at saftey. Great pick up, keep it going.

  12. Twauto22 says:

Big pick up considering Dixon probably follows Raymond to Lsu… huge huge huge huge huge huge huge pick up.. Haters can just go and be Hawkeye fans

    1. Husker Tadow says:

      Tadow!

  13. Colorado Springer says:

Sooo… haven’t heard much from the super fanatics about how Bo just gives young coaches jobs because nobody else wants them. Apparently the good coaches from the SEC have a better opinion of the coaches from NU than some of the local folks.

    1. A Fan says:

Missed that he was recruited by Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana, the powerhouses of the Big 10. Michigan State is the only other team that warrants respect. Anyone who thinks we’re going to get elite by beating out Indiana for a recruit is a fool.

      1. Husker Tadow says:

Aha! There it is! The flock of Starlings has arrived.

        1. A Fan says:

More of the same stupidity. Thanks.

      2. Mosier says:

There are very few prospects with more offers out there at this point. Especially considering the inside track both Nebraska and OSU had on this kid it makes the offer list smaller. No one else has come in an offered Banderas because it is assumed he will be in.

  14. Mr Football says:

Can you please stop using the players names and just use stars. Signed moron.

    1. Husker Tadow says:

      Awesome take. Signed.. Loves Morons

      Tadow!

      1. A Fan says:

A moron… who loves morons. Classic.

  15. NUCORNDEVIL says:

I hear Toledo is a sweet hot spot for 2 and 3 star talent………..i knew joining the big slow was going to pay off, wait, what was that, another coach jumping ship?
Not to fear, I’m sure Bo has a bowling buddy who played center @ Cardinal Mooney that can come in and coach DB’s.

    1. Colorado Springer says:

Yeah, we should only recruit in that hotbed of football talent, Lincoln East.

  16. TRUEHuskerfan says:

“A FAN” seems to be the most knowledgeable guy on here. All bow down. What a tool. Pretty sad your only reason to get on the web is to spew your hatred about the Huskers, or a kid you havent seen, or heard of til now. Since you are talking down about a player who is coming to the Huskers, how about a reverse role. “A FAN”, we should listen to you why? What are your credentials? I will await your answer. Or your next reply talking down about a kid you have no clue about.

    1. Mike Caramba says:

A Fan is generally fine on here, but he’s been a little upset about the recruiting situation for a while. If a recruit is four stars, “he’s only three stars on _______.” If he’s four stars on everything, “look at who else recruiting him!” My guess is Nebraska will have a pretty decent class this year (ranking-wise…not that I care much about that) and he’ll calm down a bit. For now, he’ll find reason to be upset with any recruiting news.

      1. A Fan says:

Mike… I apologize. My comments were directed at TRUEHuskerfan, not you.

      2. A Fan says:

You are right. I’m not happy with recruiting, unless Nebraska is getting a crop of players who have offers from top schools. It is what it is. IMO… until we consistently get those kinds of athletes, we are going to be a 3 or 4 loss team, every year.

        1. Mike Caramba says:

Clearly we don’t see eye-to-eye on recruiting, but at least you use logic and you’re consistent.

        2. Colorado Springer says:

What are the top schools? Alabama & LSU have been good lately. Over the last 50 years, Nebraska has won more games than any other program. Are we a top school?

    2. A Fan says:

Lighten up Francis. The kid has offers from decent schools. If your argument is… the current offer list is the same as a list that has USC, Alabama, OU, etc, on it… you’re a fool. Nebraska is not going to get back unless we recruit who that have offers from the top schools. It’s as simple as that. You can get off your knees now.

      1. TRUEHuskerfan says:

“get off my knees?” Seriously? I follow this site often and have respect for most of your posts. But to come out and basically call a future Husker player worthless because he doesnt have Alabama, OU, USC, etc.. going after him, thats about as shallow as shallow gets. Dont get all smart A on me, calling yourself a “fan” yet turn around and knock some poor kid who wants to come to our school. For all you know, this kid could become a superstar. Because a no-name player possibly couldnt become NFL material right? Thats just preposterous!!

        1. TRUEHuskerfan says:

And for the record, I do agree we need more star power players. But the phrase “diamond in the rough” isnt said because it has never happened.

        2. A Fan says:

You’re saying he’s worthless. And today he was offered by Ohio State, per Skers. So… it’s clear I jumped the gun.

The rule is… the kids that are recruited by the top schools are usually top talent. The exception is the “diamond in the rough.” And to think that a lot of exceptions are going to get Nebraska back to elite status is foolish. And it’s not going to happen.

  17. Kid says:

Let’s get to the important issue here — I don’t know if I want a guy named Courtney Love on our football team. I’m a little concerned……

  18. Skers says:

Marcus was offered by Ohio State today.

    1. TRUEHuskerfan says:

Ohio State?!!! Well this means he may be good. But it dont matter til he becomes a 4 or 5 star player. After reading all the crap people are talking about him, wouldnt surprise me if he goes there instead. I would.

      1. TRUEHuskerfan says:

        sorry, meant 5 stars.
