Tim Clemenger will be the next coach to try to turn around the football program at Omaha Northwest.
Clemenger will be the Huskies’ fourth coach since 2006. The defensive coordinator for the Huskies during Damon Benning’s three seasons as head coach, he also has been an assistant coach at Papillion-La Vista and Peru State College. He played four years at Peru State and was second team all-conference.
Benning, a Northwest graduate and former Nebraska running back, went winless in his 27 games at Northwest. The Huskies have a 28-game losing streak and haven’t had a winning season since 1992.
Benning couldn’t immediately be reached Thursday for comment. Omaha Public Schools spokeswoman Kailyn Watson said Benning resigned from his coaching position on April 4.
The job opening didn’t need to be posted, Watson said, because building principals have the discretion to appoint a qualified internal candidate when they have extracurricular vacancies such as coaching positions.
