World-Herald Sports Omaha World-Herald

FIRST INNING
Arizona

Michael Roth settles in quickly, retiring the side in order on 14 pitches. Johnny Field had the hardest-hit ball, a lineout to center.
South Carolina
Much like Konner Wade on Sunday, James Farris gets a boost from his defense. After Christian Walker draws a two-out walk, third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean makes a nifty diving stop to his left and throws out LB Dantzler to end the inning.

SECOND INNING
Arizona

Roth loosens up even more by fanning red-hot Robert Refsnyder and then Bobby Brown on an eight-pitch at-bat to complete another 1-2-3 frame.
South Carolina
Five pitches, three outs for Farris. Called strike three on Adam Matthews, who probably swung anyway, followed by a pair of one-pitch groundouts.

THIRD INNING
Arizona

Joseph Maggi ends Roth’s streak of 28 consecutive retired batters with a double down the left-field line. Riley Moore moves him to third with a sacrifice bunt. With the middle infielders playing back, No. 9 batter Trent Gilbert hits a routine grounder to second, scoring Maggi for the game’s first run.
South Carolina
Grayson Greiner launches a shot to left that probably would be a home run in many ballparks, but it was caught easily by Field. After a strikeout, Farris completes the 1-2-3 frame by getting Evan Marzilli on a rare 3-4-1 groundout off Maggi’s glove.

FOURTH INNING
Arizona

With one out, Matthews makes a diving catch in the right-center gap off Alex Mejia’s bat, with the ball visible in his glove as he skidded to a stop. After Refsnyder singles, Joey Pankake makes a tough play look easy at short, fielding a short-hop grounder to his right and throwing out Mejias-Brean to end the inning.
South Carolina
Farris works around a two-out single up the middle by Dantzler by getting Matthews to ground out harmlessly to second.

FIFTH INNING
Arizona

Roth keeps posting zeroes. Two groundouts and his third strikeout equal another 1-2-3 inning for the lefty.
South Carolina
Farris retires the Gamecocks in order for the third time in five innings, including his third strikeout.

SIXTH INNING
Arizona

Eight pitches result in two routine fly balls to the outfield and an easy ground ball to short as Roth sails into the seventh and waits for his offense to show some life.
South Carolina
No. 9 batter Chase Vergason lines a shot to right that is caught by Refsnyder with one foot on the warning track. A pair of groundouts sends Farris to the seventh having retired 16 of 17 batters.

SEVENTH INNING
Arizona

Mejia singles and is sacrificed to second by Refsnyder. Mejias-Brean is walked intentionally. Brown’s hot shot to first is fielded by Walker, who throws to second for the force. Roth drops the ball at first trying to complete the double play. Matt Price enters and gets Brandon Dixon to foul out to first.
South Carolina
Walker walks to cap a 12-pitch at-bat. Dantzler pops out to short, but Matthews singles to right on a hit-and-run, putting runners at first and third. Kyle Martin chops one to first, and Walker hesitates at third. But Martin doesn’t look that way, allowing Walker to tie the game at 1. Tanner English flies out to end the threat.

EIGHTH INNING
Arizona

Gilbert hits a one-out single, then Joey Rickard strikes out. Field hits one sharply to Dantzler at third, and his low throw goes for an error, allowing Gilbert to get to third. Price gets out of it by inducing Mejia to fly out to center.
South Carolina
Greiner is hit by a pitch. Vergason lays down a bunt, and Mejias-Brean makes a terrific throw to nip Greiner at second. Marzilli strikes out, but Vergason steals second on the play and takes third on catcher Moore’s overthrow. Mathew Troupe enters and strikes out Pankake when his 3-2 pitch catches the outside corner.

NINTH INNING
Arizona

Refsnyder singles to left, and Mejias-Brean sacrifices him to second on an 0-2 bunt. Brown is walked intentionally and then Dixon strokes a double down the left-field line, scoring Refsnyder for a 2-1 lead. After a strikeout, Gilbert laces a two-run single to right, making it 4-1. Rickard grounds out.
South Carolina
Walker singles and steals second. Dantzler walks. Matthews strikes out. Martin walks to load the bases. English lines out to Gilbert near the bag at second. Greiner flies out to Refsnyder in right.
