We’ve hit the end of June, when the college camps wind down and the recruiting sites and corporate sponsors start wooing kids to their camps. A lot of coaches generally take a quick breather in July before conference media days and fall camp begins. Since I’ll be knee-deep in swim stuff, I thought I’d roll out an early Big Ten update you can chew over all week.
Here are where Big Ten teams fit into the national rankings thus far according to 247Sports:
2. Michigan (22 commits/90.50 avg. rating per recruit)
10. Ohio State (12/91.17)
12. Penn State (12/90.00)
20. Iowa (15/81.87)
27. Illinois (13/82.31)
28. Nebraska (11/86.00)
46. Wisconsin (8/85.38)
47. Michigan State (8/84.88)
58. Northwestern (7/82.86)
77. Minnesota (4/82.25)
86. Purdue (3/88.67)
100. Indiana (1/82.00)
Here are the recruiting ratings of NU’s non-conference opponents in 2015 and 2016:
26. Tennessee (12/85.33)
37. BYU(11/78.00)
41. Miami (8/87.63)
92. Southern Miss (3/75.00)
NR. Fresno State (0/0)
NR. South Alabama (0/0)
NR. Wyoming (0/0)
And here are the current Big Ten commits ranked in the Top 247 players in the country:

28. Adam Breneman, 4 stars, TE, Penn State
32. Cam Burrows, 4 stars, CB, Ohio State
39. JT Barrett 4 stars, QB, Ohio State

105. Henry Poggi, 4 stars, DT, Michigan
114. Greg Webb, 4 stars, DT, Penn State
143. Evan Lisle, 4 stars, OT, Ohio State
157. Josh Banderas, 4 stars, LB, Nebraska
173. Garrett Sickels, 4 stars, DE, Penn State
174. Ben Gedeon, 4 stars, LB, Michigan

206. Patrick Kugler, 4 stars, C, Michigan
225. Matt Alviti, 4 stars, QB, Northwestern
229. DeVeon Smith, 4 stars, RB, Michigan
234. Gareon Conley, 4 stars, CB, Michigan
That’s 12 for Michigan, eight for Ohio State, five for Penn State, and one each for Illinois, Nebraska and Northwestern. Not one for Iowa, which is second in the Big Ten in overall commits.
Do I expect that to change? Yes. A few of the Michigan commits may be overrated, for one thing. (The Wolverines’ top commit so far, Shane Morris, is a guy I’ve watched quite a bit. He’s decent, but not great, and darn skinny to boot.) One or two of Nebraska’s commits should move into the Top 247 (Courtney Love and, if you ask me, Nathan Gerry). And the Huskers will land one or two commits that falls in that range. I think.
But it should be a wake up call, no doubt. The Big Ten’s other traditional programs — remember, commish Jim Delany said there were four — are off to a hot start in this cycle. And Nebraska, with its Big Red Weekend and aggressive offering strategies, has more than held its own. But NU’s up against three young, energized coaching staffs that are closer to big talent bases than the Huskers are.
Nebraska can still land a top-15 class. The prospects are still on the board for it to happen. But if the Huskers do, they’ll have Big Ten company: Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.
