Burkhead on Maxwell Award list
Rich Kaipust Omaha World-Herald

Monday marked the start of “watch list” time for the many college football awards, and Nebraska I-back Rex Burkhead’s name was attached to one of the most prestigious for 2012.

Burkhead is one of 64 players on the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which has honored the nation’s best overall player since 1937. Burkhead, a senior from Plano, Texas, ran for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, and also caught 21 passes.

Also on the Maxwell Award watch list was Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg. The Maxwell list included six other Big Ten players — Montee Ball of Wisconsin, Denard Robinson and Fitzgerald Toussaint of Michigan, Silas Redd of Penn State, Braxton Miller of Ohio State and Le’Veon Bell of Michigan State.

Nebraska did not have a player on the Bednarik Award watch list, which did include cornerback Micah Hyde and linebacker James Morris of Iowa, as well as linebacker A.J. Klein of Iowa State.

The lists will keep coming, with the following schedule, and look for kicker/punter Brett Maher’s name to pop up this Wednesday on both the Groza and Guy lists:

Tuesday: Mackey Award, Rimington Trophy.

Wednesday: Lou Groza Award, Ray Guy Award.

Thursday: Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Outland Trophy.

Friday:Jim Thorpe Award.

July 16: Butkus Award, Lombardi Award.

July 17:Biletnikoff Award.

July 18:Davey O’Brien Award.

July 19:Doak Walker Award.

July 20:Walter Camp Award.
