Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez is one of 34 quarterbacks on the Davey O’Brien Award watch list, the second straight year he’s been recognized as a preseason candidate for the national QB honor.
Martinez accounted for 2,963 yards of total offense (874 on the ground), throwing 13 touchdowns and running for nine more scores in 2011. He completed just 56 percent of his passes — but the junior has been devoting his offseason to the improvement of his throwing mechanics and his footwork.
Four other Big Ten QBs were on the list — Ohio State’s Braxton Miller, Michigan’s Denard Robinson, Illinois’ Nathan Scheelhaase and Iowa’s James Vandenberg.
