What a mess it has been for Iowa football and its running backs.
The Hawkeyes are down to one player with game experience after Wednesday afternoon’s dismissal of sophomore De’Andre Johnson of Miami, who was involved in two legal matters last weekend.
Last year’s starter, Marcus Coker, mysteriously transferred last winter to FBS school Stony Brook, better known for reaching the College World Series this summer.
The new No. 1 on the Hawkeyes’ fall depth chart is sophomore Damon Bullock, who last year gained 20 yards in 10 carries. Johnson, with his 79 yards in 18 carries, had been second before being booted from the team.
Andre Dawson, a walk-on from Iowa Western Community College, now will get a shot as will two incoming freshmen — Greg Garmon and Barkley Hill.
Garmon won’t face game punishment, coach Kirk Ferentz said, for pleading guilty this summer to possession of drug paraphernalia.
Volunteers may be welcome.
