The first day of Nebraska football practice came with several roster announcements and confirmations from NU coach Bo Pelini.
>>>Ryan Klachko, a four-star offensive line recruit from Springfield, Ill., has decided to transfer. The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder was part of a touted 2011 class of offensive linemen.
“We have a culture around here and if somebody doesn’t feel they fit into that culture – for whatever reason — he decided to take his talents elsewhere,” Pelini said. “I wish him well.”
Reached by phone, Klachko said, “I’m not doing any comments.”
>>>Redshirt freshman Todd Peat, Jr., also a four-star recruit from the 2011 class, did not make the 105-man roster. Lingering effects from a back injury suffered last year was only “part” of why Peat didn’t make it, Pelini said. He is still part of the team. Guard Nick Ash is the other scholarship player who didn’t make the 105.
>>>2012 defensive recruits Jared Afalava and Alonzo Moore are still waiting for the nod from the NCAA on their academic eligibility.
“We’re still waiting back on some paperwork and things that had to be refiled with the NCAA,” Pelini said.
>>>Seven true freshman walk-ons made the 105, including Gretna fullback Andy Janovich, the only player on the 105 who didn’t participate in the summer bridge program. The other walk-ons who made it: Wide receivers Brandon Reilly (Lincoln Southwest), Jordan Nelson (Omaha Burke) and Sam Foltz (Grand Island); tight end Trey Foster (Lincoln Southeast); and running backs King Frazier and Graham Nabity (Elkhorn).
“A lot goes into the 105 and at the end of the day we bring in the guys who obviously provide us with the best depth,” Pelini said. “…It’s not easy because we do have a roster full of guys who we feel can play and help this football team.”
>>>Sophomore Braylon Heard took most of his snaps at running back to start camp.
>>>Pelini said the first practice had good tempo and execution.
“It was a good first day,” he said. “But it was a first day.”
>>>Former NU safety Austin Cassidy has joined the team as a graduate manager.
