Wouldn’t you know that after six months (or so) without rain that we’d get a downpour on the first Friday night of the high school football season.
The first-half sprinkles gave way to a second-half downpour at Buell Stadium but Millard North and Millard South — both ranked in the preseason top 5 — played on. Fortunately, there was no lightning that would have halted play and probably forced the completion of the game Saturday morning.
Yes, we did need the rain. But from a coverage standpoint, it tends to wreak havoc with your stat sheets. And have you ever tried to write on wet paper? Not good.
There are times when I’ll cover a game from the press box, but I usually prefer to walk the sideline. That gives me a unique perspective and often yields other info that could end up in a future notes column.
I’m just hoping this isn’t an omen for the weeks ahead, because this rainy weather on high school Friday nights can be contagious.
Better keep the umbrella handy, just in case.
