1. The first Husker football news conference is less than 12 hours away. Can you feel it? I expect various starting positions to be the hot topic, including center. Speaking of senior Justin Jackson, he’s been requested by an armada of media tomorrow. Wonder when someone will ask Coach Bo about redshirting Tommie Armstrong. I’ll put the over-under at five and take the overs. Barely.
2. Big sweeps for Nebraska and Creighton volleyball this weekend. What a year for volleyball fans. What a year for NU and CU to end their series.
3. If you know Rick Majerus, or even if you don’t, please read this incredible Sunday piece by St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports columnist Bernie Miklasz.
Omaha is praying for Big Rick to make a full recovery. Majerus is a popular friend of Omaha, where he’s usually hanging out with chums Joe Hauser and Brother Mike Wilmot. Majerus is one of the great X and O coaches and teachers of the game, a brilliant mind, that nobody ever talks about. If he never coaches again, I’ll take it. As long as he’s healthy.
4. As a Dodger fan, I’m extremely nervous and a little embarrassed by the blockbuster trade with Boston. I’m used to winning with a farm system. These deals where you load the deck more often backfire than they produce World Series trophies. That was the second biggest Dodger story of the weekend, anyway. Vin Scully is returning to the booth next year, when he’ll be 84 years young. I grew up listening to Vin on the radio in Escondido, Calif., back in the mid-1960′s. Thank goodness for satellite radio.
