Doing the right thing

As expected, Millard North’s football game against Omaha Creighton Prep on Friday night was packed with emotion.

And in the heat of the game, it might be easy to let those emotions get the best of you. But Mustangs coach Fred Petito didn’t let that happen.

With the game in hand in the closing seconds, Millard North could have tacked on one more touchdown. But on first down from the Prep 1-yard line, quarterback Isaac Aakre took a knee and the Mustangs had their 17-7 win.

It was a show of sportsmanship that frankly seems to be lacking on the high school sports scene these days. Afterward, Petito shared a friendly postgame handshake with Junior Jays coach Chris Nizzi — a handshake that probably wouldn’t have been so genial if Millard North had pushed across that last TD.

It was a hard-fought game played between two quality teams. And it ended the way it should have, without a play that would have done nothing but stirred up some bad blood.

Nice job, Mustangs.
