First quarter: Burkhead is back
Rich Kaipust Omaha World-Herald

Nebraska I-back Rex Burkhead didn’t take long to re-introduce himself to the Memorial Stadium crowd.

In his first action since suffering a left knee injury on Sept. 1, Burkhead had carries of 6 and 12 yards before busting a career-long 61-yard run with 11:41 left in the first quarter.

Burkhead also had a 25-yard pass reception that helped set up the Huskers’ second score. Nebraska came out of the first quarter with a 35-0 lead.

Some other first-quarter nuggets:

>> Ameer Abdullah scored on an 8-yard run, his team-leading sixth touchdown of the season.

>> Nebraska’s third and fourth touchdowns were one-play drives. Taylor Martinez passed 35 yards to Quincy Enunwa (after an Idaho State fake punt) and 68 yards to Kenny Bell. The play with Bell was actually a forward flip in the backfield.

>> Ciante Evans returned an interception 29 yards for the TD that put the Huskers ahead 35-0 with 2:52 left in the quarter.

>> Jamal Turner started the game with a 35-yard kickoff return.

>> Martinez started off 0 for 3 passing, then went 3 for 3 for 128 yards to finish the quarter. Ron Kellogg replaced him with two minutes left in the quarter.

>> Idaho State’s first 10 offensive plays (including the fake punt) included just two that netted positive yardage (a 3-yard pass and a 1-yard run).
