Nebraska I-back Rex Burkhead and quarterback Taylor Martinez could both hit milestones Saturday that few Huskers have reached in the storied history of the program.
Burkhead needs 73 yards to become the seventh NU player to reach 3,000 yards rushing. Burkhead also currently sits No. 7 on the Huskers’ all-time chart at 2,927, needing 111 yards to pass Ken Clark and move into sixth place.
Martinez is 221 yards from reaching 5,000 passing, where he would join Zac Taylor (5,850), Joe Ganz (5,125) and Dave Humm (5,035). Martinez also needs just 84 yards to join Eric Crouch (7,915) as the only Huskers to eclipse 7,000 yards of total offense.
Some other tidbits as we near the 7 p.m. CDT kickoff between Nebraska and Ohio State here at Ohio Stadium:
>> Nebraska will be trying to reach 250 yards rushing for the sixth straight game to start the 2012 season. It started the 2000 season with seven straight games of 250 rushing or more.
>> NU hasn’t beaten a team ranked higher than No. 12 on the road since 1997, although it matched it a year ago at Penn State. Ohio State is No. 12 in the AP Top 25, but the Buckeyes are not included in the coaches poll because they currently are on probation.
>> The Huskers haven’t started 2-0 in league play since 2006.
