Tom’s Takes: Nebraska 23, Michigan 9

Big night for Fisher: I’m happy for Sean Fisher. The senior linebacker from Millard North has had a tough career — broken leg, change of conferences, change of styles, lots of critics on his back. Fisher had his best game Saturday night, and along with David Santos and Alonzo Whaley, Nebraska’s linebackers looked Big Ten tough. Well done, Mr. Fisher.

Questionable calls: When did the Big Ten hire Dan Beebe? My, all those flags. NU was penalized eight times for 104 yards, but it’s hard to come down on NU for the number. More than one was questionable, including the targeting penalty on Josh Mitchell and the “hit to the head” on P.J. Smith. These are tough calls, in more ways than one. You want safety to come first. But if you’re going to give 15 yards, intent should be clear. Neither of those were, in my opinion. On the other hand, Bo Pelini (assuming that it was the coach — he took off his hat and yelled at one official) has to be careful with the unsportsmanlike calls. The Big 12 refs had a short fuse with him. He doesn’t need the Big Ten zebras on the Bo Watch, too.

Fun finish: We’ve got a pennant race, folks. This is where it gets fun. A win at East Lansing next weekend would go a long way to winning the division. The way this crazy league goes week to week, who knows if NU even has to win out to get to Indy?
