Hello, Maryland

The University of Maryland Board of Regents has voted unanimously to send the Terrapins to the Big Ten.

Now UM must apply for admission to the league and receive approval from at least nine of 12 Big Ten schools. The MBOT isn’t voting today unless admission was assured.

The Big Ten Network reports that Maryland will join the league for the 2014-2015 season. So Big Ten schedules will change. Perhaps even the 2013 football schedule. We’ll see what we can confirm.

The Big Ten just got a little…bigger.

Now – who’s next? Rutgers?

I don't like it. Unless we add more teams out west/midwest. making the east too important. Like Texas all over again.

I don't like it at all. Waters down the conference. Who cares about Maryland? I know it's all about $$, but it's a lame move that makes a weak football conference even weaker.

Can open up new areas for recruiting in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York...back East in general. Good for TV revenues. Interesting to see how the divisions are reshaped by this. Hopefully it just goes "East-West" rather than this stupid "Legends and Leaders" division nonsense. West: Nebraska, Iowa, Minn, Wis, Ill, NW and either Indiana or Purdue. East: Indiana or Purdue, UM, MSU, OSU, PSU, Rutgers, Maryland. Nebraska is in the toughest division now, but this could make it somewhat easier for future Big 10 championships.

It's an obvious grab for TV sets. I get that. But it dilutes an already stretched B1G base. I can only guess the big money from NY/Balt./DC was the reason. The one good thing is it gives more area for recruiting. Just hope when they re-align they get smart and put Wisc. in the west, and Mich. in the east with OSU(where they should be). In the end, it can be done, but should they have done it? Look forward to some good columns from Sam and Lee on this one.

I think a Rutgers addition would be good, not so sure about Maryland, however the exposure to New York-New Jersey television (and Baltimore) would be welcome revenue. Like the other posters, I think we need to realign the divisions East vs West as I love New York but it is a long trip to go every other year as a conference game. Recruiting.....well I am not sure other than Rozier how many East Coast kids we have lured to the farmland so far....

Here's a different slant: Could this be a veiled attempt at getting Notre Dame into the ACC? If they cause a collapse (FSU leaving the ACC, and more teams leave) Notre Dame could potentially not like their non-football deal with the ACC anymore and with the playoffs, if the Domers are going to want to land in a conference what would be the most appealing conference at that point? With the ACC not a desired place to join anymore, they'd come to the B1G. Anyone think of that scenario...a power play for ND within the next few years?

This is driven by revenue (more TV's watching) and the change to the bowl playoff looming. Big Ten will be at 14 schools soon, but I think the ultimate goal will be 16 members. Would really like to see Nebraska and Wisconsin in the same division. That's a true rivalry. Not this attempt at one with Iowa that the Big Ten is trying to create.

Its all about the money...with the conference owning the BTN the number of household TV sets that will now be watching BTN sports jumps by a huge amount with adding Maryland and Rutgers. Personally I think it weakens the conference athletically, but then Delany forgot to consult with me.......again! LOL

Can we rejoin the Big 12? This has got to be a breaking-point. The Big 10 just become more irrelevant. People across Big 12 and SEC country have got to be dying laughing over this one. Who cares if the Big Ten Network makes more money, the league just become less competitive nation-wide. If recruiting in MD and NJ was so great, then surely, MD and Rutgers wouldn't be 150-year old doormats from weak conferences. I'm sorry, if anything, this move will push students from those areas more than ever to the SEC and the other spotlight football powers.

If it's possible to feel some sympathy for Missouri fans, now would be the time. For two decades they were willing to crawl over ground glass to get into the Big Ten, only to lose out first to Nebraska, now to a school that averages 36,000 in home football attendance.

It has been reported that the University of Maryland will have to pay $50,000,000 to the ACC as an exit fee.

this is a big yawn. maryland football has no real tradition, they don't even sell out most games, and as far as tv eyeballs in the DC Metro area - sorry - but the eyeballs are trained on the Redskins, the Nats, and the Caps. It's a pro-town.
