Forget Hattiesburg, Miss., and New Orleans, and Kansas City. Nebraska and Southern Miss will play each other in Lincoln again next year.
The two schools agreed to amend their three-game contract, moving the Sept. 7, 2013, game to Memorial Stadium.
It was originally set to be played at Southern Miss’ home venue. Then the Superdome was considered. Then Arrowhead Stadium. (The USM athletic department is actively searching ways to balance its budget. Deadspin has more on that).
Now, it’s Lincoln. Again. Nebraska beat the Golden Eagles 49-20 at home to begin this season. The two teams will finish their series at Memorial Stadium in 2015.
The statement from athletic director Tom Osborne: “There were discussions about moving this game to a neutral site, but as we continued to talk with Southern Miss, moving the game to Lincoln became an option. That opportunity appeared to be the most beneficial for both schools at this time.”
We’ve unsuccessfully reached out to the Southern Miss athletic department for comment.
The additional home game next year means Nebraska will host eight contests inside Memorial Stadium, and won’t go on the road until Oct. 12 at Purdue.
