Wisconsin’s Bo loves CU’s McDermott

Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan is good friends with Creighton coach Greg McDermott, and has watched Greg’s son, Doug, play since high school.

The player both saw in the prep ranks, Ryan said Monday, is far different than the one on college All-America lists today.

“As Greg will even tell you, Doug has gotten a lot better than anyone would have imagined,” Ryan said. “But you never underestimate a gym rat or underestimate a kid with a fire.”

Ryan got to see that first-hand last month when Creighton thumped Wisconsin in a tournament in Las Vegas.

“Doug is so dedicated to the game and getting better,” the coach said. “He doesn’t worry about the frivolous things. He doesn’t get involved in how neat his uniform looks or what kind of shoes he has on.

“Doug is the consummate worker and a basketball IQ guy. He just had his way with us, which didn’t surprise anybody, although you’d like to think you could hold somebody down.”

McDermott had 30 points and eight rebounds in CU’s 84-74 win over Wisconsin.
