Scouting UNO: The Mavericks play their first road game of the season. UNO is off to its best start since going 14-1 in 2007-08. Jamie Nash is fifth in the country in assists (7.2 per game) and 11th in steals (3.9). She leads the Summit League in both categories. Paige Frauendorfer ranks fifth in the Summit in scoring (14.4) and is second in rebounding (8.9) — including first in offensive rebounds (3.1). Backup guard Cathleen Cox is out for the season after tearing a knee ligament. Backup forward Casse Vaughn, averaging 7.3 points in 11.8 minutes, and backup guard Ericka House, averaging 9.8 points, are Arkansas natives.
Scouting UAPB: The Lady Lions, 1-25 last year, are picked to finish last in the 10-team Southwestern Athletic Conference. They’ve lost to Kansas State, Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, Missouri and Wichita State by an average of 35 points. Their wins were over Division II LeMoyne-Owen (Tenn.) and NAIA Philander Smith (Ark.). UAPB averages 24.6 turnovers per game, 342nd out of 343 teams in Division I. Senior forward Chigozianyi Okwumbua, averaging 10.9 points per game, was a preseason second-team All-SWAC selection.
