Nebraska’s football team has scheduled three games against Northern Illinois for Sept. 24, 2016, Sept. 2, 2017 and Sept. 14, 2019. The first of those games will be played the Chicago Bears’ Soldier Field. On Oct. 1, 2016, the Huskers are currently scheduled to play at Northwestern, but with Rutgers and Maryland joining the Big Ten before that, all schedules will have be redone anyway.
”I am very pleased to announce this 2016 game in Chicago with Nebraska, one of the most storied programs in college football,” NIU athletic director Jeff Compher said. “This series would not have come together without the efforts of [Nebraska Director of Athletics] Tom Osborne so I especially want to thank him for his willingness to work with us to schedule these three games.”
NIU released news of the games. NU and the Huskies last played in 1988 and 1989 in Lincoln. Both were Husker routs.
This year, Northern Illinois lost its lone game of the year, 18-17, to Iowa at Soldier Field.
Nebraska also announced Monday that it would play McNeese State Sept. 6, 2014 — the first year of the new playoff system.
Nebraska’s 2014 non-conference schedule is now complete:
- Aug. 30 – Florida Atlantic
- Sept. 6 – McNeese State
- Sept. 13 – at Fresno State
- Sept. 20 – Miami (Fla.)
Nebraska’s 2016 non-conference schedule is also now complete:
