Good things happening for Maher
Rich Kaipust Omaha World-Herald

Nebraska kicker-punter Brett Maher is gaining some momentum as he transitions from Husker to NFL draft hopeful.

Maher is listed as the No. 4 kicker in updated position rankings by ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper. According to NU media relations, the Kearney High graduate also has an invitation to the NFL Combine, which starts Feb. 20 in Indianapolis.

Maher has not yet confirmed any plans for the January all-star games.

Maher made 20 of 27 field goals and averaged 41.8 yards per punt as a senior. The two-time All-Big Ten selection made 39 of 50 field goals over two seasons after replacing Alex Henery, now with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Also, NU I-back Rex Burkhead has an invitation to the East-West Shrine Game, and tight end Ben Cotton and linebacker Will Compton have been selected for the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. Both games are scheduled for Jan. 19.
