The question was asked at a game last week: Can anyone beat Bellevue West?
My answer: Yes. And that’s not a slight on the Thunderbirds, who have done everything right so far this girls basketball season and are the only unbeaten team in Class A at 13-0.
Coach Marc Kruger’s squad boasts a very nice inside-outside game with sharpshooting guard Madi Braun and center Kate Liveringhouse. Quality players such as Elisha Cobbs, Annie Szczepaniak, Taylor Ditoro, Julie Targy and Chloe Akin-Otiko make them even tougher.
The T-birds captured the Metro holiday tourney and easily handled Iowa power Sioux City Heelan in the Nebraska Prep Classic last week, but there are at least three major tests looming in the next few weeks. The first comes Saturday at defending Class A champ Omaha Central, followed by a road game Jan. 26 at Millard West and a rematch against crosstown rival Bellevue East on Feb. 12.
Then comes districts and state.
A Class A team hasn’t finished the season undefeated since Lincoln Northeast in 2005. The T-birds might prove me wrong, but I’d be surprised if they’ll be able to make it through this season unscathed.
We’ll see how it plays out.
