Stan the Man

Let’s step away from the high school beat for a minute and talk about a baseball Hall of Famer — Stan “The Man” Musial — who passed away Saturday at age 92.

I had the pleasure of meeting Musial at one of Bob Gibson’s celebrity golf tournaments. Those tourneys, which haven’t been held for several years, drew many well-known athletes and gave fans the opportunity to see these people up close.

Musial took part in the event the year it was held at Quarry Oaks. It was very hot that day and I don’t think Stan finished his round, but he was a trooper throughout and a very nice guy.

I also remember him speaking before the event. He finished talking and then pulled out a harmonica, proceeding to play a flawless version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

To have a baseball legend show his undying love for the game in such a simple way was a real treat. And I’ll never forget it.

Rest in peace, Stan.
