Scouting CU: The Bluejays will be trying to rebound from Friday’s 58-41 setback at Indiana State, their worst loss of the season. Marissa Janning scored 15 points in that game, improving her scoring average to a team-leading 12.3. All of Janning’s minutes have come off the bench, but coach Jim Flanery might have to consider moving her into the starting lineup as Carli Tritz’s knee continues to slow her. Tritz was Creighton’s scoring leader last season when she earned first-team, All-Missouri Valley Conference honors. The Jays found success inside in their earlier meeting with the Redbirds as they made 21 of 38 shots from inside the arc in the 64-45 victory.
Scouting ISU: The Redbirds broke a two-game skid with a victory Friday against Drake. Guard Jamie Russell will need to be more effective Sunday than she was in the first meeting with Creighton. The Bluejays held her to nine points in their 19-point win in Omaha. Russell, Janae Smith and Candace Sykes have accounted for 60 percent of Illinois State’s scoring this season. Smith also leads the Redbirds in rebounding at 8.8 per game and in blocked shots, while Sykes is the team’s primary perimeter threat. She has made 47 of Illinois State’s 105 3-pointers.
Opening tips: Creighton has won three of the last four meetings and leads the series 30-16. Illinois State is 9-4 at home this season and has won five of six Valley games at Redbird Arena.
