DES MOINES — Western Iowa beat writer Kevin White won first place in the Best Sports Story category of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation’s 2013 Better Newspapers Contest.

White’s story was on former Riverside wrestler Collin Applegate, who returned to the mat 60 days after having his left leg amputated just above the knee in a farm accident. The story won first in the Daily Class 2 category, which includes all Iowa newspapers with a circulation of 10,000 and more.

The awards were announced last weekend in the Iowa Newspaper Association’s awards banquet at the Des Moines Marriott hotel. More than 4,100 entries in dozens of categories were judged by the South Dakota Newspaper Association.

The Carroll Daily Times Herald was named by the INA as its 2013 “Newspaper of the Year.”
