Prestigious honor: As a tribute to Iowa’s 500 wrestling officials, six who are officiating at least their 20th state tournament will lead the Grand March on Saturday, including Tim Baier of Greenfield and Jim Christensen of Fontanelle. Baier finished fifth in the 1974 state meet for Greenfield and is working his 27th state meet in his 36th year of officiating. He is a sales manager for Schildberg Construction in Greenfield. Christensen competed on Lenox’s first wrestling program and is working his 29th state meet. He lives in Fontanelle and is employed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. The others leading the Grand March are Dale Acheson, Mike Denner, Bob Murphy and Marv Reiland.

Going for four: In addition to Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Jake Marlin, Denver-Tripoli’s Brandon Sorensen (52-0 at 145) also will be seeking to join the 21 who have won four state titles. Both compete in 2-A.

Striving for three: Tri-Center senior Loren Williams and Spirit Lake Park’s Doug Miner are seeking to join the 78 wrestlers who have won three state titles. Williams is rated first at 152 in 1-A, while Miner is second at 120 in 2-A. Williams could have a showdown with No. 2 Grant Henderson of Alburnett in the second round.
