Sunday was former Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead’s moment to perform for NFL scouts at the Combine in Indianapolis. His measurements: 5-foot-10, 214 pounds. Here’s a quick recap of his current marks:
40-yard dash: 4.73 seconds.
Vertical jump: 39 inches
Broad jump: Ten feet, five inches
Bench press: 21 reps at 225 pounds
3 cone drill: 6.85 seconds
20-yard shuttle: 4.09 seconds
60-yard shuttle: 11.51 seconds
Burkhead had the second-best vertical and broad jumps among all running backs. The only disappointing mark in that quartet is the 40-yard dash time, which I suspect Burkhead will try to improve upon at Nebraska’s Pro Day.
Watching Burkhead for four years, you’d never pick out Burkhead as the fastest runner. But in the NFL, guys who can take it 70 yards — guys with moves, vision and great speed – are rarer than they used to be because of the athletes on defense.
