A Shepard leads them
Jess Shepard scored 28 points in Lincoln Southeast’s win. She needs 26 points today to break Maurtice Ivy’s Class A tournament record of 80 points, set in 1984. Shepard broke the Omaha Central legend’s Class A season record of 614 with her second basket Friday, and now leads with 640 points.
Champs eliminated
Grand Island Northwest and O’Neill St. Mary’s, in the last games of the day, eliminated the defending champions in their classes. Northwest ended Seward’s four-year title run in Class B, and St. Mary’s held off West Point Guardian Angels in Class D-1.
Crushing injury
Friday’s most poignant moment at Devaney happened after Chadron’s leading scorer, junior Ashlea Kerr, reinjured a knee in the first quarter against Pierce. Pierce students were leaders in giving her a standing ovation.
They said it
“I think there are a lot of similarities, but it’s still a different team and different people. It’s always fun to shake that bucket and see who rises to the top.”
— Hastings St. Cecilia coach Jahn Kile, whose team will face Crofton in Saturday’s Class C-2 state final after winning the Class C-1 title in 2011.
