Will Jessica Shepard be playing basketball at Lincoln Southeast next season?
That’s a question that is tied to the future of her father, Mark, who is a finalist for the Fremont superintendent job. An offer is expected to be made to either Shepard or the other finalist by next week.
The decision will impact Jessica, a sophomore forward who is one of the top players in the state. The Nebraska recruit scored 79 points — one short of the Class A record that has stood since 1984 — as the Knights captured their 10th state title Saturday at the state tournament.
The loss would be a big blow to Southeast, which also will lose high-scoring senior guard Alexa Kastanek. On the other hand, the addition of Shepard would immediately give Fremont a legitimate shot at a state tournament berth.
A lot of coaches are watching to see how this scenario plays out. And we should know more soon.
