Did you get fired? Did your bosses finally put your column out of its misery? Did you turn into a giant slacker?
No. No. No more than usual.
I’ve been getting emails and Twitter messages lately about the lack of Mad Chatter. Isn’t it supposed to come Monday, Wednesday, Friday? Yes. A couple big stories (here and here) interrupted the schedule in early March. And this week, a bigger story happened. Our family welcomed new baby Natalie!
I told my wife Monday morning — a few hours before delivery — that I’d join her in the O.R. when I finished posting Mad Chatter. You should’ve seen the look on her face!
Ideally, Natalie would’ve arrived during May or July, when there’s nothing happening in the sports world and I’m filling Chatter columns with YouTube links to 1980s NBA games. But, of course, she’s a girl, so she had to be difficult and come during March Madness.
Actually, Natalie arrived within a couple hours of Tiger Woods regaining his No. 1 world ranking. Ugh. I’m no fan of Tiger. But it’s not as bad as the timing of our first child.
The only sports juggernaut I root against more than Tiger Woods is Duke. And three years ago, Luke was born during the Blue Devils’ national championship win over Butler. I only got to see the final 30 seconds of the game.
On one hand, it would’ve been incredibly cool had Butler’s half-court shot gone in the same night my son was born. On the other hand, I would’ve been obligated to name him Gordon Hayward Chatelain.
Anyway, thanks for reading (and wondering about) Mad Chatter. The plan is to be back Monday.
