Crusaders’ Elliston wins award
Maddie Elliston is the state’s Gatorade girls soccer player of the year and the third from Omaha Marian.
The 5-foot-2 junior defender and midfielder, a Penn State commitment, helped Marian card 22 consecutive shutouts over two years. She had a goal and three assists this season as the Crusaders (13-2) advanced to the Class A state semifinals.
A member of the U.S. under-18 women’s national team, she is ranked 12th in the 2014 recruiting class by

Last-throw heartache
Not once, but three times in the past two years at the state track meet, Wayne State throws recruit Michaela Dendinger lost to the final contestant in the competition.
This year in Class D, it was Jordan Lempka of Sterling thwarting Dendinger in the discus and Kelbie Lyon of Giltner doing the same in the shot put.
“Despite the heartache, Michaela displayed great grace and class,” reader Bill Sloup of Seward, Neb., wrote. “This is the side of competition that too often gets missed. Her attitude is worthy of mention for all who fall just short of their goals.”
