Millard South junior catcher Madi Unzicker was named Nebraska Softball Player of the Year, Gatorade and USA TODAY announced Thursday. The annual award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, academic achievement and character.
The second softball player to be chosen from Millard South (Melissa Negrete, 2006), Unzicker is now a finalist for the national player of the year award, announced in June. She led the Patriots (29-5) to the Class A state championship, hit .536 with 12 home runs, 42 RBIs and 50 runs and was named captain of The World-Herald All-Nebraska team. Unzicker matched the Class A record for career home runs with 25.
Unzicker maintained a 3.92 GPA and volunteered at a homeless shelter, the American Red Cross and with youth softball programs.
