The top backup to Taylor Martinez after spring practices has a monthlong audition coming up. Armstrong’s dose of in-game snaps this fall will likely be prescribed in August. A knee injury sidelined Armstrong for much of his redshirt year in 2012, but he spent the spring taking a good portion of the first-team reps during game-like scrimmages.

Armstrong has shown promise as a leader already. And he showed his dual-threat potential at the spring game, smoothly running the option while completing five passes for 102 yards.

But will he do enough to earn playing time? How Nebraska chooses to work Armstrong into its weekly game plans will be a storyline to watch this fall.
