Nebraska offensive linemen Spencer Long and Jeremiah Sirles were named to the Outland Trophy preseason watch list Thursday. The 75-player list, compiled by the Football Writers of America, puts a spotlight on contenders to receive the annual award for the nation’s most outstanding interior lineman.
Long, a 6-foot-4, 315-pound guard, started all 14 games during his junior season. He was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection and was a second-team All-America selection by the AP and Walter Camp Foundation.
Sirles, a 6-foot-6, 310-pound offensive tackle, also started all 14 games last season and was a Big Ten second-team selection as a junior.
Other Big Ten selections include Wisconsin offensive tackle Ryan Groy, Minnesota defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman, Penn State defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan, Ohio State offensive tackle Jack Mewhort, Ohio State guard Andrew Norwell, Penn State guard John Urschel and Northwestern center Brandon Vitabile.
The 2013 Outland Trophy will be announced Dec. 12, and will be awarded in Omaha on Jan. 9, 2014. The Huskers’ nine Outland Trophy winners is more than any other program.
