The league announced in April that it would move to a nine-game conference schedule in 2016 and 2017. Based on the new East-West division alignment, we already knew six of Nebraska’s opponents for those years — Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Minnesota, Purdue and Iowa. Now, the other three have been revealed.
>> Nebraska still has four non-conference games on the schedule for 2016 (home games against Fresno State, Tennessee and Wyoming, and a neutral site match-up against Northern Illinois at Soldier Field). One of those has to go, to make room for these nine league games. The latest from the athletic department is that the re-arranging process is still ongoing.
>> Road trips to Ohio State and Wisconsin — arguably the two toughest venues in the league — on back-to-back weekends in 2016??? Umm, yeah. That’ll be fun for Bo Pelini and Co.
>> The Huskers’ regular season finales against Iowa are listed to be played on Nov. 25, 2016, and Nov. 24, 2017. Both are Fridays.
>> Conference games in mid-September? That Nebraska-Rutgers matchup in 2017 is set for Week 4. The Huskers have a home game against Northern Illinois (Sept. 2) and a road trip to Tennessee (Sept. 9) in the books already. Nothing for Sept. 16 just yet.
>> Cherish this fall’s Nebraska-Michigan game at The Big House because it will be at least four seasons before the two iconic football brands meet in the regular season again. … Nebraska and Penn State will take a three-year break from playing one another in the regular season before facing off in 2017.
>> Just in case you needed a reminder, below are the 2014 and 2015 conference schedules for the Huskers (still just eight conference games).
2014: Illinois, at Michigan State, at Northwestern, vs. Rutgers, vs. Purdue, at Wisconsin, vs. Minnesota, at Iowa
2015: at Illinois, vs. Wisconsin, at Minnesota, vs. Northwestern, at Purdue, vs. Michigan State, at Rutgers, vs. Iowa
