Those Husker fan Twitter exclamations that Nebraska football had a new fan in actor Matt Damon were right on the money. That’s because Damon was accompanying during UNL’s new student enrollment a player who hopes to make the Huskers’ team as an unrecruited walk-on.
Ishmail Jackson told Huskers Illustrated Thursday that he intends to try out as an athlete for NU’s 2013 football team. He’s a 5-foot-11, 180-pound two-star prospect from Hollywood (Fla.) South Broward High School, where he played wide receiver and defensive back.
And, yes, he’s Damon’s nephew by way of Damon’s marriage to Luciana Bozán Barroso in 2005.
“It was Matt’s first time and he was amazed,” Jackson told HI. “He said Nebraska had so much to offer. We went through the whole orientation process. He found out a lot of stuff he didn’t know. He was like ‘Man, I love this. It’s great. The setup here is great. They don’t want you to drop off.’ That’s the main thing he liked about it. The college is not going to just let you be out there on your own. There’s help everywhere to get the help you need.”
We have a call out to Jackson. More later.
