Women’s soccer: UNO picked sixth in Summit
Mavericks Today Omaha World-Herald

The UNO women’s soccer team was picked Thursday to finish sixth in the eight-team Summit League in a preseason poll of league coaches.

The Mavs went 3-15 overall last season but were and 3-5 in the Summit League and lost just one player from that squad, All-Summit forward Danielle Archuleta.

UNO earned its three wins in a four-game stretch to begin conference play, but the Mavs dropped the final four games, three of which came by one goal. UNO returns All-Summit Freshman Team member Hannah Wampler, who put up three goals and one assist in her first year at UNO last season.

Coaches picked Denver as the overwhelming favorite with the maximum seven first-place votes — coaches weren’t allowed to vote for their own team.

The complete poll:

Rank, Team, Points (First-place votes)
1. Denver 49, (7)
2. Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne, 39 (1)
3. Western Illinois, 34
4. North Dakota State, 32
5. South Dakota State, 30
6. UNO, 20
7t. IUPUI, 10
7t. South Dakota, 10

The Mavs begin the 2013 preseason Thursday in a 6 p.m. exhibition match against Drake at the UNO Soccer Field. UNO opens the regular season Aug. 23 at New Mexico State.
