Players to watch in Nebraska prep volleyball in 2013

Olivia Boender, Waverly
6-2 Senior
The future Husker belted 530 kills last season as the Vikings finished third in Class B. Boender also had 51 aces and 35 blocks.

Payton Chohon, Columbus Scotus
5-10 Senior
She had 293 kills and 43 blocks for perennial Class C-1 contender Scotus, which finished the runner-up last season to Kearney Catholic.

Brittany Lawrence, North Platte St. Patrick’s
6-3 Senior
The Creighton recruit had more than 350 kills last season to help the Lady Irish reach the state tournament for the ninth time. She’ll be one of the tallest players in Class D-1 this season.

Natalie Mickelson, Gretna
5-7 Senior
The University of Nebraska at Omaha recruit had 332 kills last season to help the Dragons reach the Class B state final. The All-Eastern Midlands Conference performer also had 335 digs.

Sydney O’Shaughnessy, Omaha Marian
5-9 Senior
The University of Nebraska at Omaha recruit dished out almost 500 assists last season in the Crusaders’ 6-2 attack and had 123 kills. She also had 47 aces and 230 digs.

Katie Placke, Grand Island Northwest
6-1 Senior
The Hastings College recruit helped the Vikings capture Class B last season with 193 kills and 349 assists. She also had 195 digs, 58 aces and 46 blocks.

Dani Root, Waverly
6-1 Senior
The West Virginia recruit had 369 kills in 2012 and combines with Boender to give the Vikings one of the most potent outside hitting tandems in the state.

Taylor Thiele, Aurora
5-11 Senior
The Bradley University recruit pounded 423 kills last season for the Huskies. She also had 60 blocks, 24 aces and 372 digs.

Sydney Townsend, Lincoln Pius X
5-8 Senior
An All-Nebraska performer last season at libero, the Nebraska recruit will shift to the net for her senior season and play outside hitter. Townsend had 663 digs last season and 36 aces.

Ashley Witt, Lincoln Pius X
5-11 Senior
The Southern Illinois-Edwardsville recruit led the team last season with 408 kills. She also had 201 digs and 26 blocks.
