Former Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard admitted in a hearing Monday that he violated the probation attached to his felony assault sentence during a July 11 DUI arrest.
Lancaster County Court judge Gwen Stacy set Dennard’s sentencing hearing for Dec. 5. Dennard, who starts for the New England Patriots, may receive a sentence on top of the 30 days he’s already scheduled to serve next spring on the assault conviction.
Dennard said he’d had two beers several hours before the DUI stop — he did not specify the size of those beers — and admittedly struggled to say the alphabet backward when an officer asked him to.
“I have a hard time doing that right now,” Dennard said in court.
Prosecutors said Dennard’s car straddled the center line of the road, and he refused to blow properly into the breathalyzer, “puffing his cheeks” as if he were blowing without producing the requisite amount of air. Prosecutors said officers eventually did get partial samples of a .107 blood-alcohol content level in Dennard’s car and .153 at detox.
